Who is PhoozL?

Canon EOS C300 Firmware Update 1.0.5.1.00

18/05/2012 The cost of owning one of the world’s most coveted high-end cameras has just been dramatically reduced, following the launch of a landmark global marketing initiative by Hasselblad.

The makers of the world's most advanced camera system have announced plans to cut the cost of ownership on a number of models - including a massive 22.9% off the entry-point H4D-31 (with 35-90mm lens) and 20.59% off  the company's 'ultimate photography tool', the 60 megapixel H4D-60 camera.

Under the revised pricing structure the H4D-31 (incl. 35-90mm lens) has been reduced by 3,565 euros to 11,995 euros. The H4D-60 cost is down 6,200 euros to 23,900 euros.

Chris Russell-Fish, Hasselblad's Global Sales and Marketing Director said: "This is a groundbreaking move and a very important day indeed for every photographer who aspires to own one of the best cameras in the world. For many, price has long been the biggest barrier to ownership. Now we have substantially reduced prices on six units and there really has never been a better time to get your hands on a Hasselblad. Photographers can now buy into our fully integrated H System capture solutions with an H4D-31 camera body for less than 9,000 euros."

He added: "This price reduction campaign is part of an innovative and dynamic marketing strategy for the company, ahead of the world's biggest photographic trade fair; photokina, Cologne, in September. We are determined that more of the world's serious creative photographers will now have unprecedented access to a Hasselblad at a price they can afford."

The popular Hasselblad trade-in opportunity will also continue. Russell-Fish explained: "We have adjusted this programme to reflect our new price structure. Photographers can get more information online."

Under the new deal the H4D-40 unit is reduced by 1,000 euros; the H4D-50 by 3,000 euros; the H4D-50MS by 3,000 euros; the H4D-200MS by 4,500 euros and the CFV-50 Digital Back by 2,000 euros.

And in a separate stand-alone offer customers who buy a new Hasselblad camera and lens before the end of July will be eligible to purchase a second lens at just 50% of the manufacturer's recommended sales price.

Photoshop CS6, le novità

Adobe ha rilasciato da qualche giorno la nuova versione del suo software più celebre, Photoshop. Le novità come di consuetudine sono tantissime, alcune si notano subito, altre invece sono piccoli miglioramenti a funzioni già esistenti. In questo articolo vi illustrerò quali sono le novità principali della versione per computer.
La prima cosa che salta all’occhio installando PS CS6 è il colore dell’interfaccia, ora è possibile scegliere tra 4 tonalità di grigio con luminosità che varia dal 22% fino all’86% (il grigio chiaro classico di PS). Una modifica che invece non è così lampante alla prima apertura è il nuovo motore grafico “Mercury Graphics Engine”, gli effetti sono però palesi qualora si utilizzino strumenti come “alterazione marionetta” o il filtro “fluidifica” perché l’applicazione delle alterazioni avviene istantaneamente su file “normali” e in tempi molto ridotti su file di grandi dimensioni.
Dai test che ho condotto personalmente con la versione Beta ho notato un generale miglioramento delle performance anche su computer non particolarmente performanti, Photoshop usa la scheda grafica per rendere fluido l’utilizzo di molti comandi e anche senza possedere l’ultimo ritrovato tecnologico potrete godere di prestazioni eccellenti, vi sconsiglio però di settare l’uso intensivo della scheda grafica qualora stiate lavorando su file con centinaia di livelli perché in tal caso, specialmente le operazioni di zoom (ctrl + space + movimento cursore), subiranno rallentamenti a meno di possedere hardware di altissimo livello.
Le impostazioni di Photoshop potrete salvarle ed esportarle su altri computer e non dovrete perdere tempo a personalizzare il programma quando utilizzate un pc che non è il vostro.
Un’importante novità sono i nuovi strumenti per le sfocature, aprendo un comando qualsiasi tra “field blur” “iris blur” e “shift tilt” si accede alla “blur gallery”, ossia una paletta che permette di lavorare con tutti e 3 gli strumenti, di controllare parametri come la luminosità o il colore dello sfocato in modo da creare una resa sui punti luminosi non troppo dissimile da quella ottenibile con ampie aperture di diaframma. Con i nuovi comandi in pochissimo si riesce a realizzare sfocature realistiche mantenendo integra la nitidezza di una o più zone della fotografia, con CS6 chiunque può applicare in pochi secondi l’effetto “shift tilt”, in questo caso il risultato difficilmente sarà realistico (dipende molto dalla foto di partenza) e per ottenere un risultato fisicamente corretto nonostante l’indubbio aiuto che CS6 vi può dare bisognerà lavorare manualmente con maschere e selezioni (esempio in galleria).
La funzione “crop” è stata rivoluzionata, a meno di spuntare la casella “elimina le aree ritagliate” lo strumento taglierina è sempre reversibile, altro miglioramento è la possibilità di impostare un rapporto di proporzioni (3:2, 4:3, 16:9, personale, etc). Con un apposito comando si può ritagliare una porzione di immagine seguendo delle linee prospettiche.
Ci sono 2 grandi innovazioni anche nella funzione più basilare di tutte, il “salva”; la prima è che il salvataggio avviene in background e quindi non è più necessario aspettare il termine dell’operazione per poter continuare a lavorare e la seconda è il salvataggio automatico che crea un backup utile in caso di arresti imprevisti del sistema dovuti magari ad un black out.
CS6 integra un nuovo strumento che permette di spostare una porzione di immagine in base al contenuto senza dover scontornare manualmente o dover riempire l’area rimasta vuota, Photoshop chiede esclusivamente di selezionare a grandi linee l’oggetto da muovere e di posizionarlo altrove. Questo strumento a mio avviso è ancora abbastanza acerbo, funziona bene quando l’immagine è semplice ma sbaglia sovente negli altri casi, in compenso sono state migliorate le funzioni di riempimento automatico in base al contenuto e qualora “content-aware move” non dovesse dare il risultato sperato si possono ritoccare gli errori molto facilmente con strumenti più classici.
Gli amanti della fotografia architettonica (e non solo) sanno bene che le immagini realizzate con obiettivi grandangolari o fish-eye presentano notevoli distorsioni prospettiche e correggerle non è sempre cosa facile. Adobe ha introdotto un filtro per la correzione di questi difetti che può operare sia in modalità automatica che manuale, in entrambi i casi i risultati sono ottimi e l’uso del nuovo filtro intuitivo.
Se siete fortunati possessori di un monitor a 10 bit il passaggio a CS6 per voi è a dir poco obbligatorio, il nuovo motore sviluppato da Adobe supporta la visualizzazione delle profondità colore fino a 10 bit e potrete finalmente sfruttare al 100% il vostro hardware.
Personalmente non amo occuparmi di video perché trovo inutilmente complessi i software che si utilizzano per realizzarli. Sono anni che sogno un software come Photoshop con in più una timeline e la possibilità di esportare video ad alta qualità. Adobe ha realizzato il mio sogno che immagino sia condiviso da molti, CS6 può creare time-lapse e montaggi video di qualità professionale anche in 4k senza troppe difficoltà e soprattutto senza costi aggiuntivi, infatti non sarete costretti ad acquistare la versione “extended” per poter lavorare sui video.
Photoshop è stato aggiornato in tantissimi altri aspetti, è stato migliorato camera raw, le correzioni automatiche, i pennelli, gli strumenti di testo, l’HDR, sono stati implementati il supporto ai file .tiff con elevata profondità colore, la ricerca tra i livelli, e molto altro ancora. Bisogna ammettere che Adobe ancora una volta è riuscita a migliorare un programma già ottimo. Personalmente nonostante sia un utilizzatore assiduo di PS ritengo che anche in CS6 la gestione del bilanciamento del bianco sia un grosso problema irrisolto, anche passando da camera raw non si hanno gli strumenti migliori per una precisa correzione; altri software per esempio, permettono di selezionare un punto o a scelta un area campione per calibrare il bianco.

A few randon things came in that go against some of things we’ve heard about the 7D replacement.
Two bits of info say an APS-C camera capable of 10fps is in testing, the same camera also has a variation of the 61pt AF system found in the 5D Mark III and 1D X. No mention of megapixels or any other features of the prototype.

Fujifilm WCL-X100

Fujifilm has launched the Fujifilm WCL-X100, a 0.8x wide-angle converter for the Fujifilm X100 large-sensor compact camera. This conversion lens attaches directly on to the camera and converts the lens to a 19mm wide angle (28mm in 35mm terms). The design of the WCL-X100 has been carefully considered to ensure a seamless blend with the camera. It uses the same materials, textures and colours as the X100 itself, plus the optional LH-X100 lens hood and PRF-49S protective filter can be used on the conversion lens. Manufactured in Japan, the Fujifilm WCL-X100 features an all-glass optical construction using four elements in three groups, with Fujinon EBC coating.

Image processing optimises picture quality
Achieving the very best results from the WCL-X100 is simple; just select the ‘Wide Conversion Lens’ option in the Fujifilm X100’s shooting menu. To enable this extra functionality, the camera must be updated to Firmware version 1.3.0 or later, which also allows the option to be selected via the Function (Fn) or RAW buttons. The Fujifilm X100 has the option to apply image processing to shots taken using the WCL-X100 to reduce image distortion, ensure balanced illumination across the frame and reduce chromatic aberration, commonly found in wide conversion lenses.
In practice, the WCL-X100 maintains the functionality of the Fujifilm X100. The autofocussing speed remains the same, the 10cm macro distance still applies and it is also compatible with the Fujifilm X100’s hybrid viewfinder. With the optical viewfinder (OVF) selected, icons showing the edge of the frame are displayed instead of the frame rim (equivalent to 80% of the frame field of view), while selecting the electronic viewfinder (EVF) gives users a 100% field of view.

Avevamo già parlato due anni fa della semplice ma efficace idea dietro le custodie Beta Shell: proteggere il singolo obiettivo inserendolo in un cilindro rigido di plastica. Ora il sistema si rinnova, e le nuove Beta Shell Series 5 sono garantiti a prova di bomba. Polvere, acqua, martellate o addirittura un SUV possono passare sopra alla custodia senza che succeda nulla all’obiettivo protetto al suo interno.
Questo grazie alla rigidità dell’involucro esterno ed alla morbidezza della gommapiuma all’interno. In questo modo l’impatto viene assorbito e non trasmesso, assicurando la protezione della nostra attrezzatura. La chiusura stagna garantisce che acqua, polvere e sporco non possa entrare. New Firmware Release Plan from PocketWizard

LPA Design has announced a firmware release plan for the PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios to address compatibility with several new Nikon and Canon cameras and flashes, as well as the new Sekonic RT-32CTL module. The new Nikon and Canon gear is currently being reverse engineered & tested, with LPA Design being keen to stress that they do not receive any inside information from either companies. “In order to expedite the process, we will be releasing “rolling betas” which will then be rolled into production releases based on feedback during the beta phase,” LPA Design said in a statement. Firmware Release Plan for new Sekonic, Nikon & Canon Gear

Burlington, VT – In light of the recent release of several new Nikon and Canon cameras and flashes, as well as the new Sekonic RT-32CTL Module, PocketWizard Photo Products has established a Firmware Release plan for the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios to address compatibility with these new products.
The MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 offer a comprehensive list of unique features such as HyperSync™, Power Control with an AC3 ZoneController, Optimized Rear Curtain Sync and many others including our legendary broad-based reverse compatibility.  These features are what differentiate PocketWizard radios from other wireless triggers.  The MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 require specialized programming which is highly dependent on the internal coding of the camera or flash.  When a new camera or flash is released, we must reverse engineer the new internal coding to make sure the timing of our features is compatible with the new hardware.  This reverse engineering and testing can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before it meets our standards and can be released as a beta into the market for further testing.  Some gear is easier to reverse engineer than others.
It is important to note that PocketWizard does not receive any inside information from either Nikon or Canon regarding the release of new gear.  PocketWizard Photo Products must order new Nikon or Canon gear from a local dealer and wait for it to be shipped.  Once the product is received at PocketWizard headquarters in Vermont, it is then thoroughly tested, reversed engineered by our firmware engineers, tested again and then tested yet again for compatibility.
In order to expedite the process, we will be releasing “rolling betas” which will then be rolled into production releases based on feedback during the beta phase.  Our first MiniTT1/FlexTT5 Beta Firmware release is scheduled to be released very soon. At this point we are not prepared to state when other beta firmware will be released or when we expect to have a production release.  What we can tell you is that a typical beta period is two to three weeks and a production release should fall shortly thereafter assuming nothing major was discovered during the beta process.

** We have the 600EX-RT, the ST-E3-RT Commander and the 5D Mark III and have begun reverse engineering.  The 1D X is not available to the public yet.  It could be 2 to 8 weeks (or longer) after we receive ours before compatibility is available. The 5D Mark III, like the 5D Mark II and 7D before it, is presenting unique reverse engineering challenges.  If engineering and testing goes well with the 5D Mark III and we receive our 1D X sooner than expected, there may be a chance that compatibility will be available in an earlier beta.
The schedule above represents our BETA release plan.  We will make decisions about official PRODUCTION releases as we go, depending on reverse engineering progress and field reports.

The Lens/Focus Shifter is a low budget 'follow focus' product which attaches to lenses with circumferences from 176mm to 308mm, or lenses like the 50mm f/1.8 to the larger zoom lenses. The smart electronics of the adapter facilitate the complete integration of the lenses into the Leica S-System.

The new models are the Leica Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH. and Leica Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5 ASPH. wide-angle lenses, the Leica Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH. standard lens, the Leica APO-Macro-Summarit-S 120mm f/2.5 tele-macro lens and the Leica APO-Tele-Elmar-S 180mm f/3.5 telephoto lens. Designed and constructed exclusively by Leica, the central shutter available for all S lenses is not only especially compact and efficient, but also has a guaranteed service life of at least 100,000 shutter cycles, making it extremely reliable.
The Leica S-System features a dual shutter concept. This means that photographers can choose the shutter system to meet their needs and the particular situation before every shot. The camera body is constructed with a metal focal plane shutter offering a top speed of 1/4000 of a second and flash sync at 1/125. The main switch on the S2 camera body allows users to change rapidly to central shutter use as soon as a CS lens is mounted. We were able to place them in tight locations that were really close to the big stunts, which would be too risky to do with bigger cameras that would require an operator and two assistants,” McGarvey said. He was able to slide one of the Canon cameras into a sewer grating, while placing another under a pile of debris for a key shot of a car hurtling toward the lens, flipping through the air on fire.

Leica Camera AG has announced the second model in its X series of digital compact cameras: the Leica X2. Made in Germany by Leica engineers, the X2 features a new, APS-C format, professional CMOS image sensor with 16.5 megapixels (effective 16.2 megapixels), combined with a high-performance Leica Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens – a classic focal length for photojournalism – providing maximum image quality and brilliance.
The Leica X2 features an improved autofocus system, which offers flexibility in a large number of shooting situations and enables fast, precise and almost silent focusing. The camera’s profile is complemented by numerous setting options from full manual control to automatic functions, as well as intuitive handling. The 16 megapixel CMOS image sensor of the X2 is unusually large for a camera in the compact category, with each individual pixel being significant in size, and therefore gathering more light. Leica Camera AG has unveiled a very special limited edition: the Leica M9-P ‘Edition Hermès’.
Following the Leica MP ‘Edition Hermès’ (in 2003) and the Leica M7 ‘Edition Hermès’ (in 2009), this is the third in a line of premium special editions of the Leica M-System to be created in collaboration with the renowned Parisian house Hermès. The Leica M9-P ‘Edition Hermès’ is being offered as a strictly limited edition. The limited numbers, unique product design and premium finishing with numerous extras make this a truly special edition in every respect.
The highlight of the Leica M9-P ‘Edition Hermès’ is the Veau Swift calfskin leather in ocre colour, supplied by Hermès for the leather finish of the silver-chrome Leica M9-P. This extremely fine and supple leather is applied not only to the camera body, but is also used for the shoulder strap included in the set. In addition, the camera sports a special design, created in collaboration with the automotive designer Walter de’Silva. Selected features of the camera body have also been completely restyled – for example, the top and base plates, the shutter speed dial, the multi-function wheel and the shutter release. These distinguish the cameras from the standard version of the Leica M9-P, and emphasise the unique status of the limited edition. In addition to a dedicated serial number, each camera also bears one of a series of consecutive limited-edition numbers.
The Leica M9-P ‘Edition Hermès’ is offered in a choice of two different sets, containing either one or three lenses. Compared to the standard versions, the lenses included in the sets also reveal numerous differences in design, ensuring perfect harmonisation between the cameras, their lenses and accessories.
The first of the Leica M9-P ‘Edition Hermès’ sets will be available in May 2012, in a worldwide limited edition of 300. In addition to the camera, the set includes a silver-anodised Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens.
This will be followed by a very special set, which will be available in June 2012. The Leica M9-P ‘Edition Hermès’ – Série Limitée Jean-Louis Dumas, in a strictly limited edition of only 100 sets, is a celebration of the friendship and collaboration between Jean-Louis Dumas, the former president of Hermès, who died in May 2010, and Leica Camera AG. The camera in this set is accompanied by three lenses: a Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/ 2 ASPH., a Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH. and a Leica APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH., all featuring a stunning silver-anodised finish.
This unique collection of photographic equipment finds a fitting home in a hand-finished Hermès camera bag that is available exclusively as a part of this second set. This is the first Leica camera bag ever to have been created by Hermès, a company world-famous for its manufacturing excellence. As homage to Jean-Louis Dumas, a Leica photographer, the second set also includes a book with a selection of his pictures. On 190 pages, this photographic work in two volumes shows an entertainingly diverse portfolio of 200 black-and-white images captured by Jean-Louis Dumas with his Leica M camera.

The new design of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. is based on the optical design of the existing Summicron-M 50mm f/2, which has been available since 1979 (currently the oldest lens represented in the Leica M portfolio). The classic specifications – 50mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2 – offered an ideal starting point for further development.
This meant that the lens designers were able to concentrate exclusively on the improvement of image quality within these standard specifications.
In its optical design, the new Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. reflects some of the specific features of Leica’s Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. and Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. lenses. For instance, the new lens incorporates a floating element. The lens group behind the diaphragm is designed as a floating element that changes its position relative to the front group during focusing, ensuring the lens achieves outstanding imaging quality throughout its focusing range, including at closer focusing distances.
The achievement of the apochromatic correction of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. involved the use of specially formulated glass based on original developments from the former Leitz glass laboratory. The use of such glass requires great effort and many years of experience. Thanks to the consistent advancement of optical processes, working with this high-quality glass has been honed to such a fine art that it is integrated in the best possible quality in Leica lenses – as it is today, in the new Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH.

Leica M9-M con sensore Black & White

Secondo i rumors di qualche mese fa l’uscita della Leica M10 è prevista per domani mentre le notizie più recenti spostano la data a settembre ma in questo caos di notizie discordanti non si ferma il flusso di indiscrezioni sulla fotocamera con sensore in bianco e nero di cui vi avevamo precedentemente parlato. Sembra che la nuova telemetro digitale di Leica si chiamerà M9-M e sarà basata sul corpo della M9-P ma adotterà un sensore monocromatico, il prezzo dovrebbe attestarsi intorno ai 9000 US $. Non sappiamo altre specifiche tecniche ma il lancio sul mercato secondo Leica rumors avverrà questa settimana assieme ad un nuovo obiettivo 50mm f/2.0 Summicron-M, quindi l’attesa non dovrebbe essere molta.
Assieme alla M9-M potrebbe essere presentata anche la X2, una fotocamera di alta qualità con sensore da 16-18 mpx, ottica a focale fissa Summilux 35mm f/1.4 e mirino EVF opzionale, il prezzo di questa compatta di lusso sarà veramente elevato, circa 3000 US $. Secondo le ipotesi delle nostre fonti il sensore sarà in formato APS-C ma alla luce del probabile prezzo di lancio di ben 1000 $ superiore al modello precedente e alla focale più lunga rispetto la X1 non si può completamente escludere l’ipotesi di un sensore più grande (APS-H o FF).

Leica presenta: M9 Monochrome, X2 e 50mm f/2.0

Ieri nel tardo pomeriggio berlinese Leica ha presentato ufficialmente i suoi nuovi prodotti, una fotocamera telemetro, una compatta e un obiettivo per baionetta M.
Leica M9 Monochrome, questo è il nome dell’unica telemetro digitale in bianco e nero sul mercato è una fotocamera che farà certamente parlare di se. Il sensore misura 36×24mm, ha una risoluzione di 18 megapixel ed è monocromatico. Il nuovo CCD ha una matrice omogenea di pixel che rispondono a “tutte” le lunghezze d’onda della luce visibile, questo comporta una sensibilità superiore rispetto un omologo sensore a colori e di conseguenza un rapporto segnale/rumore migliore, altro vantaggio di questo CCD in bianco e nero è la nitidezza delle immagini che è in grado di catturare, non dovendo utilizzare algoritmi di demosaicizzazione il segnale di ogni singolo pixel viene direttamente registrato nel file grezzo. Può quasi sembrare un paradosso ma, nonostante sia “monochrome”, la profondità colore dei file che produce la nuova “M” è molto elevata (RAW a 16 bit) e ciò permette di sfruttare a pieno l’estesa gamma dinamica del sensore. Esteticamente la M9 Monochrome si presenta con una livrea totalmente nera identica a quella della M9-P Black Paint, per il momento non è prevista una versione silver. Il prezzo è in linea con la serie M, 7950 US $ al pubblico (6678 US $ ai rivenditori) e se volete l’impugnatura dedicata la troverete in vendita per 300 US $.
Il secondo prodotto lanciato dalla casa tedesca è un obiettivo per baionetta M, si tratta del Leica APO-Summicron 50mm f/2.0 ASPH, sarà disponibile da agosto e, a detta di Leica, è una lente nata per riscrivere gli attuali standard di qualità, un ottica da record con un prezzo che non è certo da meno: 7195 US $!
L’ultimo prodotto presentato è l’evoluzione diretta e naturale della compatta X1, contrariamente a quanto ipotizzato dai rumors l’obiettivo fisso della neo nata X2 non è un 35mm Summilux ma un Elmarit 24 mm f/2.8 ASPH. Il sensore APS-C adottato è di tipo CMOS con risoluzione di 16 mpx, rispetto il modello precedente è stato migliorato il sistema autofocus, ora più preciso e veloce. Tra gli accessori a catalogo compare un mirino ottico galileiano ma anche un EVF (mirino elettronico) con matrice da 1,4 milioni di pixel, una caratteristica interessante è la possibilità di ruotarlo di 90° verso l’alto per agevolare la visione quando si scatta dal basso. Il prezzo di prevendita su alcuni siti web è di 1995 US $.
