Hasselblad and Shriro Pacific agree to form Hasselblad subsidiary in Japan

Hasselblad and Shriro Pacific, Hasselblad's distribution partner in the Asian region, recently agreed to the formation of a new Hasselblad sales company in Japan to strengthen Hasselblad's brand presence and market position in this important camera market. The new company, Hasselblad Japan KK will operate from well-located and modern offices in the Omotesando/Harajuku area and William Penrice, former Hasselblad Area Sales Manager for Asia Pacific, will be the new company President. Egon Heldner, Managing Director of Shriro (H.K.) Ltd. and Regional Head of the Shriro Group's Imaging business will join the board of the newly formed company to support the Japan operation as well as Hasselblad's business development in the region.

After a smooth transition of the Hasselblad sales & service operation from the existing Shriro sales operation, the new company will focus on strengthening Hasselblad's market position in Japan and expanding the business in the wake of the exciting new projects launched during 'photokina 2012' in Cologne/Germany.

William Penrice said "Hasselblad and Shriro started the new market drive in Japan with an Open Studio Day at the Shinonome Ruy Studio in Tokyo on June 26 this year involving Italian portrait artist photographer Monica Silva. We are confident that with the fundamentally re-engineered Hasselblad product lineup after 'photokina 2012' the new sales operation will be able to significantly enhance Hasselblad's overall market position in Japan".

According to Egon Heldner, he sees his planned involvement in the Japan operation as "a great opportunity for Hasselblad and Shriro to strengthen the brand' s position not only in Japan but across the region and to further improve the cooperation between the 2 organizations that has lasted for over decades".

Canon EOS 6D vs Nikon D600 - Key Differences

News image
Within the past few days, both Nikon and Canon have announced new “full-frame” - or “FX format” in Nikon speak - digital SLR cameras that are more affordable than any other comparable and currently manufactured model in the two manufacturers’ line-ups. So far we’ve only had a brief encounter with each new camera - namely, the Nikon D600 and the Canon EOS 6D -, so we cannot deliver any in-depth reviews just yet (much less declare which one is “better” than the other); but in order to help you get a clearer picture of how they compare to each other specifications-wise, we’ve compiled a handy little table summarising the key differences between the two models, based on information available to us at the time of writing.

Do note that the table highlights the key differences only - keep in mind that the two cameras have a lot more similarities, ranging from the ~24x36mm size of their sensors to their top shutter speed of 1/4000th second.

Olympus Develops M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.8 Lens

Olympus is developing a new, fast moderate wide-angle lens for the Micro Four Thirds system, featuring a maximum aperture of f/1.8 plus depth-of-field and distance indicators. These come into play when the lens is set to MF mode, enabling users to utilise the time-honoured technique of zone focusing, which is great news for street photographers. More than a full stop faster than the existing Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 (read review), the new M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.8 features the faster MSC (Movie & Stills Compatible) auto focus mechanism and is expected to be of similar quality as the well-regarded Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital ED 12mm f/2 lens launched earlier this year. Note that this is currently at the development stage and more details will be announced nearer the launch.
Update: Have a look at our gallery of 22 hands-on photos!
Olympus Press Release
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 17mm 1:1.8
This is an extremely bright, large-aperture, high-resolution lens and a must-have for anyone looking to capture exceptional images on the spur of the moment. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 17mm 1:1.8 is packed with the same advanced optical technologies that have proved so successful on other high-end Olympus lenses, including the silver version of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm 1:2.0 ‘Street Photography’ lens launched earlier this year. Attractive circular bokeh is a common strength, with none of the off-axis aberration or colour fringe effects that can otherwise spoil your shot. Both lenses also make it especially easy to set the depth of field for stills with intentional background blurring. Snapshot specialists will appreciate built-in depth of field and distance indicators that show the distance at which objects are in focus, so you can focus instantly without having to look at the camera display. These indicators come into play in Manual mode, which you activate by pulling back the focus ring.
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm 1:1.8 lens is currently at the development stage and more details will be announced nearer the launch.

Olympus 15mm f/8 Body Cap Lens for Micro Four Thirds

News image
The 30mm equivalent Olympus 15mm f/8 Body Cap Lens is a funky fixed-focus, fixed-aperture lens the size of a body cap. With a depth of only 9mm, the Olympus 15mm f/8 Body Cap Lens slips easily into a jacket pocket. When mounted to a camera like the PEN lite or PEN mini, it enables quick, spur-of-the moment snaps that require no effort to set focus or aperture. Featuring a built-in lever that enables shooting in the macro range, the Olympus 15mm f/8 Body Cap Lens will go on sale in October for £70.
Olympus Press Release
15mm (30mm*) 1:8.0 Body Cap
An ultra-slim cap and flexible, fixed-focus, fixed-aperture lens in one; this is an ideal first accessory for the powerful new PEN Lite and PEN mini. PEN cameras famously combine portable dimensions with ease-of-use for goanywhere SLR-quality imaging, and the Body Cap stays true to that philosophy. It adds a mere 9mm to the depth of your camera so you can still slip it into a jacket pocket with the confidence that sensitive components will be safe from dust, scratches and smears. When you pull it out again, you’ll be able to capture subjects on the spur of the moment from one metre to infinity – with no need to focus and without attaching a fullsized lens. For close-ups, there’s a lever to extend the focus range to just 30cm from your subject.
The 15mm 1:8.0 Body Cap lens for PEN is a bargain at just £70.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2 Special Edition

News image
Olympus is launching an all-black limited edition of its M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2 Micro Four Thirds lens. Equivalent to a 24mm ultra-wideanlge optic in a 35mm system, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2 (read review) is a high-grade, all-metal, fast lens that features built-in depth of field and distance indicators, making it ideal for zone focusing. Available from October, the special-edition M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2 will retail for £849, which includes the matching metal lens hood and cap.
Olympus Press Release
Special-edition M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm 1:2.0
Collectors will be counting down the days to the launch of this limited-edition designer piece that comes as a kit with a matching lens hood and cap – all in classic black. With its wide-angle capacity and fast aperture, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm 1:2.0 lens performs superbly in low-light and snapshot situations where a flash or tripod would be inappropriate – and is of course ideal for capturing high-quality landscapes and other broad shots As an Olympus system lens, it also benefits from the Image Stabilisation (IS) built into every new Olympus camera. Most rival wide-angle lenses don’t come with stabilisation technology, which can leave you susceptible to shake and blurring with cameras that don’t have built-in IS of their own.
The special-edition M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm 1:2.0 Street Photography lens will retail for £849, which includes the matching metal lens hood and cap.

Olympus Launches M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens

News image
Olympus has announced pricing and availability for its M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro MFT lens. Originally announced in February, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 is a telemacro lens with a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:1. Housed in a dust- and splashproof body, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro is designed to complement the similarly rugged Olympus OM-D camera (but can, of course, also be mounted to any other Micro Four Thirds body). Available from October, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm 1:2.8 Macro lens carries a recommended retail price of £429.
Olympus Press Release
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 Macro lens
In terms of sheer image quality, this handsome lens gives PEN, and in particular O-MD owners, the potential to capture images on a par with high-end Four Thirds cameras using a ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50mm 1:2.0 macro lens – but with significantly less outlay. With its dust and splash-proof housing and excellent macro credentials, its natural habitat is just that: the natural world outside. At 19cm and 1:1 magnification, close-ups of animal and plants come to life in spectacular fashion, with high resolution and contrast edge-to-edge. And in bright light, its multi-layer ZERO (ZUIKO Extra-low Reflection Optical) lens coating halves the effects of ghosting and flaring compared to similar conventional coatings.
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm
1:2.8 Macro lens will cost just £429 and is compatible with a host of dedicated Olympus accessories. These include the specialist macro RF-11 ring flash and TF-22 twin flashes (in combination with the optional FR-2 4 adaptor ring).

Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH.

News image
The Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH. is a new superwide (19mm equivalent) lens for the Leica S system. With an optical formula comprising 12 elements in 10 groups, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH. exhibits an extraordinarily high degree of freedom from distortion for such a wide-angle lens. Five of the lens elements are manufactured from glass with anomalous partial dispersion to prevent negative effects such as chromatic aberration. Two aspherical elements located behind the iris and the aspherical surface of the front lens minimise monochromatic aberrations. Thanks to the unusual construction of its focusing system, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. offers extremely high image performance from the point of closest focus to infinity, the company says. The Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH. is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £5,330 including VAT from November 2012.
Leica Press Release
LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH.
New super-wide lens with outstanding optical properties
Photokina, Cologne, 17 September 2012: Leica Camera AG has expanded the Leica S medium format system with the addition of a new lens: the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. In 35 mm equivalent format, this corresponds to a focal length of 19 mm. This super-wide-angle lens guarantees excellent image quality, and is not only ideal for landscape and architectural photography, but also for interior photography and many other situations. The lens shows very high contrast rendition and maximum resolution at maximum aperture.
Thanks to the unusual construction of its focusing system, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. offers extremely high image performance from the point of closest focus to infinity. During focusing, only the middle group of three lenses is moved. At the same time, one of the lenses is moved independently as a floating element and guarantees optimum ray paths at every setting.
With an optical system comprising 12 lenses in ten groups, the Leica optical design engineers have achieved an extraordinarily high degree of freedom from distortion for such a wide-angle lens. Five of the lenses are manufactured from glass with anomalous partial dispersion to prevent negative effects, such as chromatic aberration. Two aspherical lenses located behind the iris and the aspherical surface of the front lens minimise monochromatic aberrations.
As with other Leica S-System products, the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. is distinguished by rugged and enduring design, and construction that guarantees years of dependability, even with frequent use. The lens features a robust bayonet mount and is fully sealed against dust and spray, ensuring absolute reliability under the harshest shooting conditions.
Alongside the new Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH., the current S-System lens portfolio offers a total of eight lenses (five of which will also be available in CS versions with a central shutter), that guarantee uncompromising image quality for almost all areas of photography.
The Leica Super-Elmar S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. is supplied with a lens hood that has been specially optimised for the ray paths of light passing through the optical system.
Pricing and availability
The Leica Super-Elmar-S 24mm f/3.5 ASPH. is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £5,330 inc VAT from November 2012 from authorised Leica S dealers including the Leica Store Mayfair: http://www.leica-storemayfair.co.uk, tel: 020 7629 1351. Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH.

News image
The Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. is the first zoom lens for the Leica S system. The range of focal lengths covered by the lens is equivalent to that of a 24-72mm zoom on a 35mm camera. The lens construction is based on 14 elements assembled in 4 groups. For a zoom construction, the lens achieves extraordinarily high contrast rendition and maximum resolution wide open the company claims. The Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £7,380 including VAT from November 2012.
Leca Press Release
Exceptional imaging quality and low weight:
The LEICA VARIO-ELMAR-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH.: the first zoom lens for the S-System
Photokina, Cologne, 17 September 2012: Leica Camera AG today presents the first zoom lens for the Leica S medium format system. The range of focal lengths covered is equivalent to that of a 24-72 mm zoom for 35 mm format. This means that S-System users now have access to a lens that possesses the flexibility to cover the majority of photographic needs, and simultaneously delivers the outstanding performance of primes. Photographers can now avoid time-consuming lens changes in many areas of photography, allowing them to concentrate on their subjects when time is a critical factor.
Despite its elaborate mechanical and optical construction, the new Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. is extremely compact and, with a weight of just 1,345g (with lens hood), surprisingly light – which means that photographers can use the lens for many hours at a time, without the lens feeling heavy or awkward to use.
The lens construction is based on 14 lenses assembled in four groups. For a zoom construction, the lens achieves extraordinarily high contrast rendition and maximum resolution wide open, thanks to the use of nine lenses manufactured from glass with anomalous partial dispersion, three of which are fluoride lenses with particularly low dispersion. Two aspherical surfaces on the rear-most lens element, and one on the front lens of the second group, reduce monochromatic aberrations to a minimum and ensure that image performance remains constantly high at close focusing distances.
As with the prime lenses of the Leica S-System, the Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. is distinguished by rugged and enduring design, and construction that guarantees years of dependability, even in frequent use. The lens features an extremely robust bayonet mount and is fully sealed against dust and spray. This ensures absolute dependability even under the harshest shooting conditions.
Alongside the new Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH., the current S-System portfolio offers a total of eight lenses (five of which will also be available in CS versions with a central shutter), that guarantee uncompromising imaging quality for almost all areas of photography.
The lens is supplied with a dedicated lens hood designed specifically for the ray paths of light through the optical system, which reliably prevents stray light entering the lens at all focal lengths.

The Leica ELPRO-S 180 is a new close-up conversion lens for the Leica APO-Elmar-S 180 mm f/3.5. Reducing the close focusing distance to 1.1 metres, this accessory lens achieves a significant increase – around 30 percent – in the reproduction ratio to 1:4.5. In contrast to the majority of apochromatic accessory lenses, the Leica Elpro-S 180 is dedicated to one particular lens, thus avoiding lateral chromatic aberrations and ensuring that there are no detrimental effects on the imaging qualities of the lens. Autofocus, exposure metering and all other camera and lens handling functions are maintained when using the add-on lens. The Leica Elpro-S 180 will be available at selected Leica dealers from October 2012.

Photokina, Cologne, 17 September 2012: Leica Camera AG today announced the TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH., the first fully-adjustable tilt/shift lens for the Leica S medium format system. This apochromatically corrected lens, provides options for parallel shifting and tilting (Scheimpflug principle), and offers photographers all the adjustment options usually found in field cameras, while simultaneously guaranteeing the greatest possible image quality, easy handling and universal applicability of the Leica S-System.
The Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. is ideal for product and still life photography, in which perfect perspectives and maximum depth of field are required. Its optical system consists of six individual lens elements and allows parallel shifts (shift) of up to 12 mm in all directions and tilting of the plane of focus (tilt) by up to 8°. Its apochromatically corrected lenses ensure that the familiar superior quality delivered by the S-System is maintained, even when fully exploiting the limits of creative freedom.
Tilting the plane of focus allows photographers to place it at any chosen point within the image. This means that optimum depth of field can be achieved without stopping down sharply and without having to accept the qualitative disadvantages of a closed aperture. The Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. also allows photographers to customise the location of the plane of sharpest focus.
Parallel shifting enables precise correction of converging or diverging verticals, without the loss of resolution generally encountered when applying corrections with post-processing software. This simultaneously ensures that the performance and capabilities of the S-System are preserved, and that photographers have complete control over all lines within the image frame. Thanks to its large image circle, the Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. allows the combination of tilting and shifting. This means that photographers can exploit creative freedom in all its aspects in image composition.
Due to its special construction and external form, the Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. differs to some extent from the other lenses of the S-System. For instance, it features an integrated lens hood that reliably prevents stray light entering the optical system. Shifting and tilting movements are controlled by a total of four rings. Two more rings manually control the aperture and distance settings.
As with all other lenses of the Leica S-System portfolio, the Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. is distinguished by rugged, enduring design and construction that guarantees years of dependability, even with frequent use.
Alongside the new Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH., the current S-System portfolio offers a total of eight lenses (five of which will also be available in CS versions with a central shutter), that guarantee uncompromising image quality for almost all areas of photography.
The lens is supplied with a tripod mounting plate with 1/4” and 3/8” bushes, allowing the lens to be fixed securely in any position.

Éeica Press Release
The new LEICA S: improved image quality, handling and speed set new standards in digital medium format photography
Photokina, Cologne, 17 September 2012: Leica Camera AG today presents a new camera in the Leica S-System portfolio: the Leica S. A logical development of the successful Leica S2, the new Leica S offers a further increase in image quality and sensor sensitivity, predictive autofocus, higher speed and enhanced handling. Numerous additional features, some of them unique, contribute to an improved professional workflow. In addition to the new camera body, three new lenses have been added to the S-System portfolio, significantly expanding the capabilities of the system: the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. super-wide, the Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. and the Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. tilt/shift lens.
Stephan Schulz, head of Professional Imaging at Leica Camera AG, said, “This expansion of the system is further confirmation that the dedicated digital concept of the S-System sets new standards in the world of medium format photography, while providing the speed and handling of a 35 mm SLR. Viewed in terms of its rugged resilience, reliability and versatility, the new Leica S is the first choice for photographers who refuse to make compromises.”
New image and sensor board for more quality and higher speed
One of the most notable innovations in the Leica S is its new image and sensor board. The upgrade of these electronic components has successfully increased the image quality of the Leica S, as well as improving its noise characteristics, natural colour rendition and white balance precision. The latter function has now been extended to include a ‘Grey Card’ option that allows photographers to shoot a subject with a neutral grey area – such as a grey card – and define the white balance determined as a reference for all following photos, to ensure a consistently precise colour mood from the beginning to the end of a shoot. The extended sensitivity range of the sensor at both ends gives photographers more freedom of choice in the selection of exposure parameters: the lower basic ISO setting of 100 allows longer working at maximum aperture in extremely bright conditions, while the maximum sensitivity of ISO 1600 enables users to capture noise-free images, even under difficult lighting conditions. The doubling of the buffer memory to 2 GB and support of transfer rates up to 166 MB/s enables photographers to shoot continuous sequences of up to 32 consecutive images in RAW format – at full resolution of 37.5 MP. The number of images that can be captured consecutively in JPG format is only limited by the capacity of the memory card used. Images can now be saved in parallel to the original files in a choice of 37.5, 9.3 and 2.3 megapixels to provide customers with a preview of the work in progress straight from the camera at the desired resolution.
Fast, predictive autofocus module for subjects in motion
The upgraded autofocus module not only increases the speed, but also adds to focusing precision. To ensure that moving subjects stay sharp and can be swiftly tracked, the Leica S features a predictive autofocus. The camera compares past movements of the subject and computes the location of the subject at the time of exposure. The autofocus locks on to this computed point before the shutter release is pressed. In combination with its superior image quality, the Leica S now sets new standards for professional action photography.
GPS system and levelling aid for precision and uncomplicated workflows
The Leica S is currently the only professional camera to feature an integrated GPS module that can add the geographic positioning information of the exposure location to the Exif data of an image, when required. This function also allows the precise synchronisation of the system time (internal clock) for any worldwide location where satellite signals can be received. With appropriate software – the professional image administration and processing tool, Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 4, is supplied with the camera – every image can be shown on a map and tagged with a location name that can be used to locate the image in the future. The new dual-axis levelling aid (spirit level) displays its readout in the viewfinder to allow photographers to align the subject with absolute precision in the horizontal and vertical plane, without the need for external aids.
Optimised handling
The monitor screen now offers a resolution of 920,000 pixels, a 3” diagonal and full sRGB colour space, as well as increased contrast and brightness, to allow even greater precision when assessing images. The glass covering plate of the monitor screen is manufactured from tough and scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass. Numerous other improvements have been added to make the photographer’s work easier: for instance, increased viewfinder coverage of 98 per cent, additional information displayed in the viewfinder, optimisation of the camera menu and a softer rubber coating for better grip. Significantly faster navigation in the camera menu is now possible with the new integrated joystick control, which is located on the back of the camera. More secure control of studio flash systems is afforded by the new LEMO flash sync socket.
Proven advantages of the S-System
The Leica S possesses all the proven quality characteristics of the S-System. These include the large, 30 x 45 mm, Leica Pro Format sensor and its microlens layer that guarantees consistently uniform brightness from corner to corner. The camera is extremely ruggedly built and sealed against environmental influences such as dust and rain, as with all S-Lenses. The system’s unique dual shutter concept offers photographers the choice of using the camera’s fast focal plane shutter or the central shutter of CS-version lenses, which allows flash sync at shutter speeds up to 1/1000th of a second.
The eight currently available Leica S-System lenses (five of which will also be available with a central shutter) offer photographers all important focal lengths and a first-class tilt/shift lens. At the same time, a wide range of medium format lenses from a number of other manufacturers can be easily mounted on the Leica S using appropriate adapters. Of particular interest is the S-Adapter H, which allows the use of Hasselblad H-Lenses with full support of all functions, including autofocus, central shutter control and automatic aperture control.
Further features, such as secure cable connections, multi-function memory card slots, further improved energy efficiency and the scratch resistant monitor glass, also guarantee that photographers never have to make compromises when they choose a Leica S. The Leica S stands alone as an ideal and extremely reliable tool for achieving maximum quality results in the studio and on location, under even the most unfavourable shooting conditions.
The Leica S is supplied complete with the Leica Protection Plan. The LPP offers photographers an extended warranty for a period of three years, a replacement camera to cover possible repair times, and numerous other benefits.
Together with the new Leica M, the Leica S marks the beginning of a new era in Leica’s product naming policy. In future, Leica M and S model names will omit the number suffix to emphasise the long-term significance and enduring value of the respective systems.
Pricing and availability
The Leica S is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £16,000 inc VAT from December 2012 from authorised Leica S dealers including the Leica Store Mayfair.

Lensbaby Spark

News image
Lensbaby has released the Lensbaby Spark, a new selective-focus lens geared toward young photo enthusiasts who are “looking for a creative spark to help break out of the box of traditional photography.” Like most other Lensbabies, the Spark is a manual-focus lens with a sweet spot of focus that users can move around the frame by bending the lens. Unlike its more expensive stablemates, the $80 Lensbaby Spark doesnt’t come with interchangeable aperture disks but makes do with a fixed f/5.6 aperture - meaning the size of the sweet spot cannot be controlled, and depth of field is dependent solely on camera-to-subject distance. It also lacks the Lensbaby Composer’s convenient focus ring - photographers squeeze to focus, and tilt to move the sweet spot around the image. The Spark is available now.

Schneider Press Release
For the first time SCHNEIDER KREUZNACH presents lenses for Micro Four Thirds system cameras
17.09.12, 12 Uhr
Schneider-Kreuznach presents its new range of lenses for mirrorless system cameras of the Micro Four Thirds standard at this year’s photokina in Cologne. The first lens in the series, a 14 mm wide-angle lens, will be available on the market by the third quarter of 2013.
In the fourth quarter of 2013, it will be followed by a 30 mm universal lens and a 60 mm macro version. “We are delighted at the high level of interest in our involvement in MFT,” said Harald Barth, head of the Photo Imaging division at Schneider-Kreuznach.
The new series offers ambitious users of mirrorless system cameras a choice of high-precision and powerful high-end lenses “Made in Germany”. The lenses feature a high luminous intensity and a very high resolution across the entire image. Using aspheres promises perfect image results without any image correction by the camera. The compact lenses meet the same technical standards as lenses for full frame cameras manufactured in Bad Kreuznach.
The electronic interface between lens and camera provides aperture control, precise autofocus and image optimization.
The high-quality aluminum housing, robust mechanics and hydrophobic coating of the outer lenses strongly protects against dust and water splashes. The new optical design with special high-refractive lens elements is fully optimized for the specific requirements of mirrorless system cameras.
The lenses at a glance
* Super-Angulon 14 mm/2.0 wide-angle lens (10 lens elements with 4 aspherical surfaces)
* Xenon 30 mm/1.4 universal lens (7 lens elements with 1 aspherical surface)

Canon Announces the Pixma Pro-10 and Pixma Pro-100 Printers

Canon Announces the Pixma Pro-10 and Pixma Pro-100 Printers
MISSISSAUGA, ON, September 17, 2012 – Canon Canada Inc, a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the newest additions to the PIXMA PRO-series of 13-inch inkjet printers, the PIXMA PRO-10 and PIXMA PRO-100. Built with the same quality of output and design as the flagship PIXMA PRO-1 Professional Inkjet Printer, these two models produce excellent black-and-white and colour prints to help ensure what was captured through a camera lens is reproduced exactly as it was envisioned on paper. Canon has also worked to improve the printing workflow for end-users with the new Print Studio Pro plug-in software, wireless connectivity and faster printing speeds.

“The additions of the PIXMA PRO-10 and PIXMA PRO-100 printers to the PIXMA PRO-series lineup provide photographers with a number of options to satisfy their printing needs,” said Ian Macfarlane, Senior Vice-President of Sales and Service Operations, Canon Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canon USA. “Canon is the only company that provides a complete imaging system from input to output for professionals, and these new printers along with the new EOS 6D Digital SLR Camera further illustrate our commitment to creating new technologies to help users get the most out of their images.”
PRO Mode
Canon has created and included a PRO Mode for each of the new printers which maps colour gamut for optimum balance of brightness and saturation. This colour mode also helps adjust colours by taking into consideration the characteristics of human perception. The technology helps to create prints that accurately reflect the image as seen on a monitor without needing a high level understanding of colour management. In early 2013, this feature is expected to be available as a firmware upgrade for users of the PIXMA PRO-1 printer.
Quality of Results
The two new models complete the professional class of printers offered by Canon and deliver photographic prints of professional quality with predictable colour, smooth tonal transitions and precise detail. The Canon PIXMA PRO-10 printer utilizes a 10-ink tank system with LUCIA pigment-based inks to produce a wide colour gamut and exceptional print longevity on fine art and glossy paper. The printer employs three monochrome inks, including Matte Black, to generate deep, dark blacks when using fine art paper. A key component of the PIXMA PRO-10 is the addition of Chroma Optimizer to the ink system to further improve the quality of the print. In addition to increasing the colour gamut, this feature helps to enhance the black density when printing on glossy media types. After the ink is laid down, the printer applies the Chroma Optimizer to help eliminate gloss differential that at times can reflect light irregularly, resulting in a more uniform and aesthetically pleasing print on glossy-or semi-gloss type surfaces.
The eight-colour, Canon PIXMA PRO-100 printer utilizes the ChromaLife 100+ dye-based ink system1 to produce vibrant, saturated colours on fine art and glossy papers. Three monochrome inks are included to help enhance black density and produce accurate prints with smooth tonal gradations.
To help achieve accurate prints, each printer utilizes the Optimum Image Generating System which calculates the best results for each print mode and paper type. This system helps improve colour reproduction, tonal gradations and black density while reducing graininess and metamerism. Professionals will notice the benefits of this system when the image is printed and exhibited exactly as it was envisioned.
Quality of Experience
To help deliver a streamlined print workflow to aspiring and professional photographers, Canon is introducing the Print Studio Pro plug-in software specifically for use with the new PIXMA PRO-series printers. As part of the design process for this software, Canon interviewed a wide range of photographers at various professional levels to help determine what users want out of a printing application. The Print Studio Pro software is designed to provide a simple and seamless photo printing solution from a number of applications such as the Canon Digital Photo Professional and Adobe’s Photoshop, Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. The Print Studio Pro user-interface has been designed to maximize ease-of-use with a number of options to adjust the page formats and layouts, accommodate for different user preferences and manage a number of variables including colour management and printer settings.
Because of the partnership Canon has established with major paper manufacturers, a significant number of ICC profiles are expected to be available at the time these new printers start shipping. Earlier this year, Canon expanded its media lineup for the PIXMA PRO-series to better meet the needs of professionals with Photo Paper Pro Luster, which delivers vivid colours, sharp details, and generates stunning black-and-white output with rich blacks and smooth tonality. The paper is designed to provide a consistent look and colour when viewed under various light sources and can help increase productivity through fast drying times and easy handling.
To further amplify the overall efficiency of both new models, Canon has added wireless connectivity, a first for the PIXMA PRO-series of Canon printers. Ethernet capabilities have also been included allowing multiple users to print high-quality images from one machine. Whether working on a project in a professional studio or as a student, users will find these connectivity options useful for completing projects in a timely manner without sacrificing image quality.
Both printers deliver impressive print speeds over and above previous generations of PIXMA PRO models through optimized carriage speed, the addition of the three monochrome ink tanks and maximum nozzle counts. As a result, the PIXMA PRO-100 printer can produce a 13” x 19” high-quality colour, bordered image in 90 seconds2 and create a high-quality, bordered black-and-white print 5.4-times faster than previous models, or just under three minutes2. In five minutes and 20 seconds2, the PIXMA PRO-10 printer can produce a 13” x 19” high-quality colour, bordered image in colour or a black-and-white. This increase in speed will help users improve productivity and better budget the time it takes to complete a project.
The estimated selling price of the PIXMA PRO-10 and PIXMA PRO-100 Professional Inkjet Printers are $799.99 CAD and $499.99 CAD.

The 5D Mark II: Happy 4th Anniversary!

The 5D Mark II: Happy 4th Anniversary!
The 5D Mark II
Mitch at Planet5D reminded us that today marks the 4th anniversary of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, quite possibly the most important and successful DSLR Canon or anyone else has ever released. We already know it changed the video world forever, but it also changed the still photography world. How many people do you know that the 5D Mark II was their first DSLR? I used to work in retail and saw it a lot.
Do you remember the first time you saw “Reverie“? I do, I was floored. I think the entire world’s mouth was collectively open in awe.
Sales wise, I remember a huge retailer in Canada telling me that in 2009 the 5D Mark II was 25% of their TOTAL revenue for the year. Canon sold so many of these cameras, and they continue to sell today… 4 years on!
The 5D Mark II was also my first big camera launch here at Canon Rumors, and I completely blew it! I was away in Niagara Falls with my inlaws from Ireland and ignored the site on launch night. It was my first lesson in how crazy us photogeeks are, I haven’t missed a launch since. :)
Happy anniversary to a wonderful photographic and videography tool, and I suspect people will still be using you for years to come.
LONG LIVE THE 5D MARK II!

Sigma Announces Three New Lenses: 35 f/1.4, 17-70 f/2.8-4.0 OS & 120-300 f/2.8 OS

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM

This Art lens provides photographers with a state-of-the-art alternative to the more conventional 50mm. This lens’ axial chromatic aberration is minimized, which renders a cool and smooth out-of-focus image. At low apertures, it can perform like a wide-angle lens; when opened up to F1.4, it will provide background bokeh and make the subject pop like a mid-range telephoto lens.
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM

This new Contemporary lens is designed for cameras with an APS-c sensor and covers a range equivalent to 25.5 to 105mm on a 35mm camera. An upgrade to its predecessor, which was released in December 2009, this general purpose lens offers a new design and a more compact build.
Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM

With redesigned mechanics and performance, this Sports lens is an update from its predecessor released in February 2011. This high-performance lens eases difficult shooting conditions by offering a maximum focal length of 300mm and a wide-open aperture of F2.8. This lens, like the other Sports category lenses to come, is dust and moisture resistant, and allows users to adjust the focus speed and the focus limiter via a button on the lens.
