Canon 6D Hands-On

The Canon 6D is a 20MP full frame camera that steps up in performance from the 5D Mark II, but still offers a lower entry price than what the 5D Mark II did at its debut.   For now, Canon’s full frame line-up will consist of (in order of sophistication and price) the 5D Mark II, 6D and 5D Mark III.
The 6D should offer improved dynamic range and low-light noise control thanks to larger pixels and improved processing over the 5D Mark II.  Additionally, the 6D steps up to 4.5 fps frame rate over the 5D Mark II at 3.9 fps. Another kudos goes to the locking mode dial on the 6D – a small, but great, addition.

One of the very interesting features of the 6D is the new built-in WiFi mode that works in conjunction with the free Canon EOS Remote app for iPhone/Android.  The connection to the app is pretty seamless – with no passwords to input or networks to select.

Once connected, you have the ability to review images on the 6D’s memory card and download images for sharing or editing on your smartphone or tablet.  As you view the images, you are streaming small JPEG files of 5MP in size.  By default, images you choose to download to your device are 1920×1080; however, this can be altered in the app’s settings.

Additionally, you can use your smartphone to remotely control the camera and stream a live view from the 6D.  You can adjust exposure settings and trigger the shutter remotely as well.  This is a very slick app with a load of great control into the DSLR.  It is simply amazing how these little phones are changing the way we work with everything.

There’s a lot to like about the Canon 6D and it will be the perfect full frame camera for a lot of shooters who have been waiting to move up at a cheaper entry point than the 5D Mark III.
I’ll have more on the Canon 6D once I get time with a production model; however, for now, the 6D is looking pretty sweet at a very decent price.
