First Canon 6D Footage Surfaces

Canon 6D
Johnnie Behiri shot the below video with a preproduction Canon 6D, which should start shipping in the next week or so. There is no color correction applied to this footage and audio was recorded directly to the camera.
Behiri’s initial conclusion is that “there is simply no substitute for the full frame sensor ‘look.’” That said, the moire problem is pretty bad in this short. I really thought Canon was on to something with removing moire as a serious issue from its HDSLRs given the recent improvements with the 1D X and 5D Mark III. Hopefully, this problem will be improved in the production version of the 6D. Behiri highlights the 6D’s pros and cons as follows: Camera strengths: Full frame sensor Clean high ISO in video mode (1250 is very mush usable). Manual audio adjusting PAL/NTSC Camera weakness: Severe moire Soft image No headphone socket No audio through HDMI while recording (for monitoring audio on new EVF’s) No clean HDMI output Notes: Format: 1080/25 All-I Video shot with available light. Litepanels 1×1 was used for the interview only Audio was recorded directly to the camera. No external audio recorder was used. ISO settings 640-1250 Picture profile: Netural 0,-4,-1, 0 30% sharpening was added in post (Adobe Premiere CS6) No CC was applied Equipment used in this video: Sachtler ACE L tripod Vocas base plate Lenses: Samyang 35mm, Canon 70-200 f4, Tokina 11-16mm Various Kata bags Litepanels 1×1 TV logic VFM 056 WP [via Planet 5D]

Sigma Press Release
Three Day Camera ‘Test Drive’
Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd has teamed up with a number of retailers throughout the UK to offer consumers a free three day ‘test drive’ of the latest Sigma cameras.
The range of Sigma ‘Merrill’ cameras provide photographers with a tool to capture images with a jaw-dropping level of detail. Each of these cameras utilise a 46 megapixel Foveon image sensor which is renowned for producing exceptional skin tones and a film-like quality. The sensor works by using three silicon-embedded layers of photo detectors and can efficiently reproduce colour more accurately, and offer sharper resolution, pixel for pixel, than any conventional image sensor. Since colour moiré is not generated, the use of a low-pass filter is not required, meaning light and colour, generated by the 46 megapixel APS-C X3 direct image sensor is captured with a three-dimensional feel.
The SD1 Merrill’s magnesium body and splash-proof design provide reassuring durability whilst the DP1 Merrill and DP2 Merrill cameras feature the same pro-spec technology in a go-anywhere compact body.
The following retailers have committed to stock a selection of Sigma digital cameras and accessories. The Sigma SD1 Merrill, DP1 Merrill and DP2 Merrill cameras, along with a selection of lenses, are available from these retailers to try for three days, free of charge. This promotion is available until April 2013.
This is a great opportunity for photographers to try out the Foveon based cameras and see for themselves how good they really are. For more information, please see one of the participating retailers or call Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd on 01707 329 999.

Availability of Sigma’s 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM and APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX APO DG OS HSM
Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd is pleased to announce that the 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM is now available in Sony mount with a suggested retail price of £499.99.
The Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM will also be available in Sony mount in two weeks time with a suggested retail price of £1499.99.
18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM
Designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras, this versatile lens covers wide-angle to telephoto making it suitable for many types of photography. Its small size and huge focal-range make it perfect for travel photographers and those who like to keep equipment down to a minimum. One SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element offers excellent correction of colour aberration and three aspherical lenses, including a double-sided aspherical lens, prevent and correct all types of aberrations such as astigmatism, achieving high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The close-up capability is improved with a minimum focusing distance of just 35cm throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9. When the APS-C size sensor is taken into consideration, the effective maximum reproduction ratio becomes 1:2. The lens benefits from a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) to ensures fast and quiet auto-focusing.
APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM
This is the world’s first 180mm macro lens incorporating a magnification ratio of 1:1 and a large maximum aperture of F2.8. It benefits from Sigma’s original Optical Stabiliser function and the wide F2.8 aperture allows faster shutter speeds for narrow depth of field, enabling photographers to emphasise the subject. Three FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for colour aberrations. Equipped with Sigma’s own propriety OS (Optical Stabiliser) system, this lens offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible*, enabling handheld close-up photography. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus as well as full-time manual focus capability. This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm creating an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. At 1:1 magnification, this lens has a focusing distance of 47cm/18.5in which is a greater working distance than shorter focal length macro lenses. This is advantageous when taking pictures of highly sensitive subjects such as butterflies and insects.

Canon 7D Mark II, a 40+MP DSLR and New Mirrorless Camera Coming in Early 2013?

Canon 7D Mark II Rumors
With 2013 bearing down on us, it’s only natural for rumors of new cameras to start making their way to the surface. When the Canon 7D Mark II didn’t make an appearance at Photokina 2012 back in September, new rumors pointing toward 2013 started trickling out. And, again, the latest rumors point to an early 2013 announcement date for such a camera.
The last we heard, the 7D Mark II was rumored to carry a 24MP APS-C image sensor and would continue to reside as the flagship APS-C camera in the Canon EOS lineup.  There’s no new word about specifications; however, Canon Rumors suggests that “the camera/segment will get a new naming scheme.”
The Canon EOS M is only now becoming available; however, many pros and prosumers have been crying for an EOS M body that features a viewfinder. And that’s just what the rumors point to – a Canon mirrorless camera for the more serious audience. Additional rumors for the mirrorless line-up include at least two new EF-M mount lenses.
Finally, a big question has been whether and when Canon will offer a higher resolution pro-level DSLR – especially in light of Nikon’s D800 with 36MP dwarfing everything offered by Canon.  The latest word suggests a Q1 2013 announcement and will be physically bigger than the 5D Mark III but still smaller than the Canon 1D X.

In both versions the Joby SpeedCinch™ system secures both camera and strap close to the body, freeing up the photographers hands and ensuring the camera is secure while shooting in busy environments.
When the camera is required, the system automatically extends the strap length in one fluid and fast motion – allowing the photographer to bring the camera to eye level in one easy movement - never missing a shot.
For ultimate safety and security, both versions of the Joby UltraFit Sling Strap use premium materials including stainless steel and glass-filled nylon plastic – providing super durability and a secure connection via a ¼ - 20” accessory thread mount.
Joby 3 Way Camera Strap™
Joby designed this versatile 3-way strap to offer photographers a strap with three wearing modes:  Wrist, neck and shoulder.
A convenient alternative to wrapping a neck or shoulder strap around the wrist, this compact strap allows photographers to minimize muscle fatigue with multiple ways to support the weight of the camera. The 3-Way Camera Strap™ allows quick access to impromptu shots in wrist mode or a hands-free option to change lenses in neck/shoulder mode. The breakthrough design uses retractable Dyneema® cord (which is 15 times stronger than steel wire!) to adjust the strap length and secure the camera in place.
Pricing: UltraFit Sling Strap – SRP £41.00, 3 Way Camera Strap – SRP £33.00

The Pho-Reel and Pho-Reel Plus camera strap systems offer many hours of comfort to hike with camera(s), tripod and photographic accessories, the company says. The Pho-Pod is a padded “scabbard” tripod case that attaches to the Pho-Reel Plus camera shoulder strap and provides a more comfortable and balanced means to carry tripods up to five-inches in diameter when folded. Photipherals Press Release
Photipherals Launches Innovative Birding Camera Gear, Indulge In Comfort; Outdoor Photography Equipment Designed With Sound Ergonomics
Birding photographers, wildlife and nature enthusiasts, Photipherals has launched a variety of camera gear to keep outdoor photographers more comfortable and their photography equipment more mobile and protected. These featured products are made in the USA
Photo forum discussions show photographers are looking for a comfortable camera strap with quick tripod connection. Outdoor photographers complain about hiking with a tripod, cameras and accessories. They also complain about photographing in harsh elements. Photipherals has designed and launched ergonomic camera gear to solve these problems.
More than a camera sling or speed strap, Pho-Reel’s [patent pending] design is a shoulder camera strap system. Pho-Reel and Pho-Reel Plus offer many hours of comfort to hike with camera(s), tripod and photographic accessories. Photographers no longer need a camera bag to carry multiple cameras, lenses, filters and other camera gear. Nor do they need to suffer from camera strap neck pain or fear the strap will slide from their shoulder. Pho-Reel’s easy glide and lock vinyl coated steel cable reel with a custom stainless steel clip provides multiple ways to connect the camera to the strap. The design allows photographers to quickly move the camera from side carry, to eye or tripod.
The Pho-Reel strap loops enable photographers to carry essential accessories. The Pho-Reel Plus version enables “hands free” carry of a tripod or other camera gear in padded cases using the strap’s additional clips and tethers. Carry a second camera and even more accessories with a combination of Pho-Reel and Pho-Reel Plus camera shoulder straps.
Hike in comfort with a tripod using the Pho-Pod. This tripod padded “scabbard” case attaches to the Pho-Reel Plus camera shoulder strap and provides a more comfortable and balanced means to carry tripods up to five-inches in diameter when folded. The Pho-Pod can be used to carry a telephoto-lens.
Photipherals designed a camouflaged rain-poncho with an integrated camera cover called Camo Rain Cape, to protect both photographer and camera from the elements while on the move or shooting. Camo Rain Cape camouflage pattern functions as a portable wildlife and bird blind. The rain cape is configured to work with most side-carry camera straps, in particular the Pho-Reel camera strap. Camo Rain Cape folds up compactly into its own carrying case.
Wildlife photographers and birding enthusiasts will stay dry and cleaner using Photipherals’ ground mat called PhorMat. The ground cover mat is made of durable, heavy gauge, waterproof camouflage-colored polyester. The mat weighs 24 ounces and is 24 x 57 inches/610 x 1450mm with a padded elbow area. The mat rolls up into approximately 2.5 inches by 24 inches/64 x 610 mm. The D-rings allow it to be clipped to the Pho-Reel Plus shoulder strap or an after-market strap of your choice.
Birding, nature, wildlife and landscape photographers can look to Photipherals for an ever evolving roadmap of innovative products with technology solutions for the digital photographer. A telephoto lens sighting tool called Phor-Sight is in the patent process. Phor-Sight will help birding photographers get the most from the auto focus function of telephoto lenses and dynamic composing especially for “Bird in Flight” (BIF) applications. Photographers operating in remote locations can look forward to innovative approaches to solar-power recharging products in the coming year.
About Photipherals, LLC
Photipherals, LLC designs, manufactures, and markets photographic peripheral equipment to meet the needs of digital photographers using interchangeable lens cameras to include DSLR and mirrorless (MILC) cameras. The company develops unique and patented products that offer benefits in efficiency, ergonomics, power, weight, mobility, and convenience. Pentax DSLR Transparent Bodies and Cutaways

Here are a few shots from PhotoPlus 2012 showing Pentax DSLRs with transparent bodies and even one that’s been cut in half to give you a better look at what’s going on inside that shell.

Pentax K-5 II Hands-On Review

Pentax K5 II
I haven’t really used a K-mount camera that much since my old Ricoh KR-5 Super II that I used religiously a couple decades ago as my first SLR camera.  As a result, my exposure to Pentax gear is generally limited to what I see at trade shows.  Stepping aside . . . ain’t it a bit ironic that Ricoh now owns Pentax when it previously used Pentax’s K-mount to make K1000 clones like the KR-5 Super II?
Ricoh KR-5 Super II
With that nostalgia out of the way, I took a closer look at the new Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs at the Pentax booth at PhotoPlus 2012.  At first blush, I love the way the camera feels in the hand, along with a very intuitive control and menu scheme.
Pentax K5 II
While the K-5 II is not overly large, it still felt like more of a professional tool than some similarly situated cameras from Pentax’s competitors. The rear LCD looks great and provides the relevant info without trying to get too pretty with fancy graphics.
Pentax K5 II
The K-5 II has a very fast AF even with the 18-55mm kit lens, which also has nice zoom and focus rings.  The lens zoom and focus rings have a great grip to them with the little raise rubber bumps – and the rotation is smooth and accurate.
Pentax K5 II
Additionally, the K-5 II controls are great for making quick adjustments to AF settings.  You can choose between different points and modes quickly with a switch/button that’s accessible via the right thumb – and AF-S, AF-C and M focus modes are accessible via a manual switch on the front left of the camera.
Pentax K5 II
Behind the shutter release on top of the camera, you will find an easily accessible pair of buttons for making ISO and exposure compensation adjustments.  Lots of other pro “control” buttons are found around the K-5 II.
As I was checking out the camera (and generally being very impressed), I came across a rather frustrating quirk.  As I snapped a few frames in the Pentax booth, I noticed that the camera gave me a delay wheel after every frame, which hinted that it was writing to the card and needed a couple of seconds to make things happen.
I checked the card and it turned out to be a vanilla Kingston Class 4 card (i.e., not a speed demon of a memory card).  So, I popped in a SanDisk Extreme Pro card thinking for sure that the lousy memory card was the problem; however, I was met with the same results.  It still took the same second or two for the preview image to appear on the back of the screen, which might as well be an eternity in our current high-speed electronics world.  Formatting the card in the camera yielded the same results.
Pentax K5 II
As I dig around on the K-5 II, this quirk seems rather odd because it is generally regarded as a very fast camera.  So maybe it’s not the buffer clearing that’s taking the time, but rather the preview image itself. Regardless, it’s a frustrating point of the camera – and really the only negative thing that I have to say about it.
The Pentax K-5 II is available from Photography Bay’s trusted retail partner, B&H Photo, at the following link:

Drift HD Ghost
More details in the press release below.

Drift Innovation Debuts the Drift HD Ghost – the First-Ever Action Camera Equipped with Two-Way LED Remote and Continuous Loop Video – Solving the Age Old Question: “Am I On?”

The Drift HD Ghost packs industry-leading features including wearable on/off remote control with LEDs displaying mode in use, continuous loop video recording, built-in Wi-Fi and an integrated 2-inch Gorilla Glass® LCD screen for instant playback and sharing

LONDON – November 7, 2012 – Drift Innovation, the award-winning action sports technology company specializing in the capture and sharing of digital imagery, launched the most feature-rich and intuitive action camera yet – the Drift HD Ghost. Building upon a unique feature set, which includes an industry-first two-way LED remote control with on/off indicator light, video recording/tagging capabilities in continuous loop mode, and an integrated 2-inch Gorilla Glass® LCD screen, the Drift HD Ghost is the best all-in-one solution on the market.
Unlike other point of view cameras that require aftermarket accessories and peripherals for functionality, the Drift HD Ghost includes everything action sports enthusiasts need to capture professional quality video immediately. Plus, the intuitive interface is easy to use, easy to navigate and easy to set up, so users everywhere can begin recording moments after opening the box.

Drift Active StatusTM Two-Way Remote with LED Lights

The Drift HD Ghost is the only action camera packaged standard with a wearable on/off remote control with LEDs and wrist strap. The strategically placed LED lights on the remote instantly communicate the mode currently in use displaying a color-coded system indicating Video, Photo, Timelapse or Photoburst modes. The remote also streamlines functionality by allowing users to take photos and change function modes from up to 30 feet (10m) away, as well as to start and stop recording. This saves precious memory space and battery life so you can capture a full day of activities without wasting time.
“For years, the action sports crowd has looked for a solution to the question enthusiasts hate to utter: ‘Am I on?’” said John Rounds, Managing Director of Drift Americas. “Finally, Drift solves the problem with a two-way remote control. The wearable remote features the Drift Active StatusTM LED indicator which lets you know if the camera is recording or not. Sometimes you only get one shot, and it’s devastating when you miss it.”

Drift FlashbackTM Video Tag/Loop

Action sports enthusiasts can save a recorded event up to five minutes after it happens while in Video Tag/Loop mode, which records footage in a continuous loop style. The video clip is stored in the camera’s memory, and will save the clip only if the user chooses to “tag” it.

Built-In 2-Inch LCD Screen with Gorilla Glass®

The screen allows quick, real-time viewing of camera angles before you even press record. It also supports instant video playback of recorded footage, making it easier than ever to edit, delete and re-live your favorite actions whenever, and where ever, you want. Plus, its screen is covered with Gorilla Glass® to ensure scratch-proof performance even in the most rugged terrains.

Drift DataLinkTM Wi-Fi Enabled & Drift App

The Drift HD Ghost comes Wi-Fi-enabled to communicate instantly with smartphones. Combined with the Drift Mobile App (coming soon for both IOS and Android) you can preview and line up a shot remotely from your phone, change camera settings, shot recording, photo capture and playback, directly through your mobile device. You can even download content from the camera to your smartphone instantly and share content wirelessly across your favorite social media platforms.

Drift PowerStationTM

The Drift HD Ghost has the longest standard battery life on the market, providing 3 hours of recording time per charge, courtesy of the included 1700 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The Drift PowerStation™ also uniquely places the battery in the center of the camera maximizing battery life and providing an anti-vibrational system.

Advanced Drift PureTM Audio Technology

The microphone features digital and mechanical dynamic modulation technology which offers the latest innovations in digital signal processing and wind-noise reduction to provide crystal clear audio. Standard in all Drift cameras are multiple sensitivity settings and an external 3.5mm microphone connector to further enhance the captured audio.

Enhanced 7 Element Lens Design

The Drift HD Ghost boasts an upgraded lens design consisting of seven elements, ensuring optically pure performance whether filming in the Gobi desert or on top a high mountain peak. This guarantees the user high clarity, vibrantly colored, stunning HD video. While recording crystal clear HD video in a variety of resolutions (ranging from 1080p, 960p, 720p to WVGA), you can simultaneously shoot still photos without interrupting filming, so you never miss a moment.

Nine feet (3m) waterproof without any housing

The Drift HD Ghost features an improved design allowing the camera to be nine feet (3m) waterproof out of the box. So whether surfing in Indonesia or kiteboarding on the Hood River, Drift has you covered. For deep water enthusiasts Drift offers a uniquely designed waterproof housing which allows you to capture underwater adventures up to 180 feet (60m) depth.
The Drift HD Ghost is available for purchase for US $399 on http://store.driftinnovation.com/drift-hd-ghost and http://www.bhphotovideo.com. Pentax Q10 Meets 560mm Lens for a 3080mm Telephoto Monster

Pentax Q Big Lens
Here’s an interesting pair that I came across at the Pentax booth at PhotoPlus 2012.  That’s the Pentax Q10 paired to the K-mount Pentax DA 560mm F5.6 ED lens via the Adapter Q.  The odd combo results in a roughly 3080mm reach compared to a full frame camera, which is due to the small 1/2.3″ sensor found inside the Pentax Q10.
