Adobe has launched the Photoshop & You experience at 550 Sutter Street in San Francisco.. Open to the public through 6th August, Photoshop & You is a place for visitors to explore the world of digital imaging with leading photographers, renowned teachers, industry influencers and the Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop Elements teams. After a quick photo shoot, guests can visit the Extreme Imaging Lab hosted by popular Photoshop Evangelist Russell Brown, which also features a printing station for guests to have their favourite critter letterform, created by distinguished illustrator Craig Frazier, printed on Y-shirts. Visitors can also reserve individual sessions with Photoshop experts to learn how to make photos look their best. All presentations, classes and other activities are free to the public.

The Photoshop & You calendar is jam-packed with exciting product “how-to” sessions, photowalks through San Francisco’s vibrant neighborhoods and opportunities for visitors to experience extreme printing firsthand. After a quick photo shoot, guests can visit the Extreme Imaging Lab hosted by popular Photoshop Evangelist Russell Brown to see how Photoshop turns images into works of art through advanced laser engraving and large-format printing. The lab also features a printing station for guests to have their favorite critter letterform, created by distinguished illustrator Craig Frazier, printed on t-shirts. Visitors can also reserve individual sessions with Photoshop experts to learn how to make photos look their best and get a chance to have profile pictures shot by professionals.
World-renowned photographers, artists and authors such as Bert Monroy, Corey Rich, Robert Seale, Seth Resnick, Brad Mangin, Glen Wexler and Scott Kelby will make special appearances to lead workshops. Designed as a visually rich environment, Photoshop & You also includes a gallery exhibiting the works of celebrated artists such as Joel Grimes and members of the Photoshop team including Winston Hendrickson and Kelly Castro.
Additionally, a photo studio will be available for guests to try out the newest camera models, and visitors will have a chance to purchase software and limited-edition merchandise in the retail area. Net proceeds from the sales of Photoshop gear will be donated to Adobe Youth Voices, Adobe Foundation’s global signature philanthropy program.

Novacut Open Source Video Editor

The Novacut open source video editing platform is currently in development and looks like it could be quite the special video editing application.  Initially, Novacut is geared to exclusive compatibility with Canon HDSLRs; however, the Novacut team expects supported formats to grow quickly.
The most ambitious part of the Novacut product is the cloud editing possibilities.  Novacut is designed to allow multiple users work with the same project at the same time.
In additional to cloud connectivity within the program, there are also options with HTLM 5 that will allow you to make edits from a browser or even a mobile device.  How about them apples?  Editing on an NLE in the cloud with your phone…
Initially, it looks like Novacut will be exclusive to Ubuntu – with an OS X port likely coming in the near term after launch.
There are only a few days left in Novacut’s Kickstarter campaign and they’re still around $7000 away from the $25,000 goal.

Elgato Turbo.264 HD Review

Alright, so you’ve shot some great home movies on your DSLR or camcorder. Next comes the part nobody looks forward to. Getting your media off the camera, onto your devices and onto YouTube.What if there was a program that did all of that for you?
Well, Elgato has released a new program which does this with simplicity, elegance, and most importantly . . . speed.  The new Turbo.264 HD will not just convert your videos but it will sync them with iTunes and upload them to YouTube.
Using Turbo.264 was easy. Simply pull your files straight into the interface, choose your format, and go. By selecting one of the YouTube presets, you can upload your video directly to your YouTube account.
It even comes complete with customizable settings giving the advanced user control over additional aspects of the popular H.264 codec and export options. Turbo.264 even recognizes when the clips were shot and gives you the option to group them into one file by turning on “events”.

Not only does Turbo.264 take QuickTime, MPEG, and AVI files; it will handle nearly anything you can throw at it.
I recently purchased some instructional video’s offline that came in an MPEG 2 (VIDEO_TS) format. I tried to use the free and rather popular Handbrake to convert it to an mp4 format. The compression took hours and the video came out with A/V sync issues. And, if you’ve used Handbrake, you know the interface can be a bit clunky.  I used Turbo.264 and it was finished in nearly half the time, with no issues.

A feature that I really thought was nice was Turbo.264 not only gives you the option to trim the beginning and end of your media, but you can trim in the middle of the clip as well. Just add some markers, move them into place, and done.

In less than an hour’s time Turbo.264 converted months of accumulated files.  And that’s just the standalone software.  Elgato also offers a hardware accelerator which supposedly makes this program really burn. Although I did not get a chance to use it, Elgato claims it more than doubles the speed of this already fast program.
To me, the $49.95 price tag (not including the hardware) is a bit steep – especially when Apple’s Compressor is the same price. However, this product targets a different market.
Though I won’t be using Turbo.264 to compress a feature film, I did find it to be extremely simple and intuitive – perfect for anyone just wanting to save some time and a few tedious steps. This is a program even the tech-challanged could figure out.
As a professional videographer I spend enough time at the office editing, compressing and uploading.  At home, I want to spend time with my family, not clicking away through menus. Turbo.264 allowed me to do all this in a few very simple steps. So hop on over to Elgato’s website and try a free version of the software for yourself or download the full version of Turbo.264 HD on the Mac App Store.

1Ds Mark III Has Left Canada

Maybe it was the heatwave?
A few people have pointed out that the 1Ds Mark III is no longer listed on the Canon Canada web site. It has been moved to the archived products section.
Big news? Not really, but we’re starting to get to announcement time.
The camera is still listed on the Canon USA web site.
