Magic Lantern cracks “dual ISO” on 5D2 and 6D for 14 stops of dynamic range

 

A few weeks ago, planet5D was sent a significant update from A1ex over at Magic Lantern announcing 14 stops of dynamic range for the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon EOS 7D – and at the time, he didn’t think there was any chance that other cameras might get the same excitement… well, over the weekend things changed with these two tweets — now the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Canon EOS 6D appear to get the same incredible dynamic range!

This “Nikon D800x super kit” camera sculpture is huge

It took a Nikon fan from Taiwan one year to create this XL version of the Nikon D800 camera. The creation (sculpture?) is called "D800x super kit" and has a detachable battery grip, 14-24mm lens and an illuminated top panel.  The camera, lens and box are all hand-made. The details are amazing - from the images you cannot tell that you are looking at a model:

Sigma SD1 / SD1 Merrill Firmware Update

Sigma has issued firmware updates for the Sigma SD1 and Sigma SD1 Merrill digital SLR cameras. Version 1.10 for the original Sigma SD1 and Version 1.05 for the Merrill incorporate a number of improvements and fixes. It is now possible to create B/W images in raw or raw+JPEG mode, the auto focus algorithm has been refined, and the accuracy of flash exposure control has been improved. Additionally, the firmware upgrade enables the Custom Mode to save the shutter speed and the aperture value of manual exposure. You can dowload the firmware updates from the websites below.

RED Epic Dragon

Cinematographer and director Mark Toia has released a short film captured with a RED cinema camera equipped with a 6K "Epic Dragon" sensor. The five-and-a-half-minute sample movie, which was posted on the RED User forum along with a lengthy user report, demonstrates an excellent dynamic range and a very film-like, gentle highlight roll-off that's not at all similar to the harsh highlight clipping produced by most other digital cameras. "RED Dragon now has the best highlight fall off I have ever seen from any digital camera," Toia says. "Beating film! Big call I know, but after shooting film and pushing it around in telecine chains for more than a decade, I can categorically say that this new sensor has a better range than film ever had... The images out of the Dragon are so smooth now… so so smooth, like low ASA large-format film."

The RED Epic Dragon sensor offers a resolution of 19 megapixels, which would be respectable for a digital stills camera, but what really makes it unique - in addition to the apparently unsurpassed dynamic range - is that it can maintain this resolution even when shooting video - at up to 86 frames per second to boot. This is approximately ten times the resolution of a Full HD movie. Toia's sample video, which you can see below, has been downsampled for Vimeo but it does show off the dynamic range and highlight handling of the new imager very nicely.

EOS 7D Mark II Basic Specs [CR2]

EOS 7D Mark IINorthlight has received a spec list similar to what we have seen for the EOS 7D Mark II. Some of the specs are not yet written in stone.

Canon EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS Update [CR2]

The long awaited replacement….We’re told production for the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS will be “coming to an end soon”. Production for the replacement will begin sometime in late 2013 or early 2014.

Canon’s lens production has had its share of issues in the last few years with the new super-telephotos and to some extent the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II. We’re told until the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x production reaches demand, Canon will not be producing the replacement to the long-in-the-tooth EF 100-400. All issues are apparently going to be resolved sometime this fall.

An announcement and release may depend on how fast Canon can sell off existing stock of the 100-400.

Canon Press Event on August 21, 2013

A press event has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Canon’s new headquarters in New York.
Will there be a product announcement? We think so. The New EOS M cameras are on their way, but it appears Canon USA doesn’t like the system all that much, since they won’t be releasing the EF-M 11-22 lens. The others that will be talked about are the EOS 7D Mark II and an EOS-1 camera. The EOS 7D Mark II, won’t get announced until well after the EOS 70D is shipping we’ve been told. Though, stuff like that can change.
There is an EOS-1 possibility, though I’m not of the belief their will be.

Canon continues to update older professional DSLR bodies. I must say I’m pleasantly surprised they’re still supporting the Mark III bodies.

The following fixes have been incorporated in the new firmware

1. Resolves the following phenomenon: when the camera is not attached to a lens, power consumption may be higher than usual, causing premature battery drain.
2. Resolves a phenomenon in which “Err 02” may be displayed when the shutter is released without a lens attached.

Canon Testing a 75+ Megapixel EOS-1 Body? [CR1]

The big megapixel camera gets bigger!
Photography Bay is reporting that a good source of theirs has told them that Canon is actively testing a 75+MP EOS-1 DSLR camera body.
I don’t find anything surprising in the megapixel count, as Canon has announced enormous megapixel sensors in the past. However, this is the first I’ve heard of an actual product using image sensors with this much resolution.
Previous rumors have placed the “big megapixel” camera from Canon in the 40-50mp range.
We do expect such a camera to make its way to us sometime in 2014.

A patent has show up showcasing an EF 50 f/1.8 IS lens. Could this be the replacement to the 50 f/1.4? We had heard about this lens existing last year. While some may desire a direct 1.4 replacement with IS, I think Canon may want some separation between the EF 50 f/1.2L and the next 50 in the lineup. We’ve also heard of a new EF 50 f/1.2L design being tested.

The Canon EOS 8D Rumors [CR0]

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve seen a few rumors for a Canon EOS 8D camera body. It first appeared on a Russian retailers web site (We won’t link because I think they’re just fishing for traffic) around the time of the EOS 70D announcement.
Today, we see a spec list published for the Canon EOS 8D on a Chinese retailer’s web site, they are below.

CR’s Take
I file this under nonsense, as there is no Canon EOS 8D in development. If this leaked to a Russian & Chinese retailer, it would have leaked many other places as well. Secondly, the “7D” moniker will continue with the next version of the camera and Canon will not be adding another APS-C DSLR to their lineup.
I resist posting this sort of stuff, however it’s now making the rounds so I have to.

Toshiba Exceria UHS-II SD Cards

Toshiba has announced its latest, UHS-II compliant Exceria and Exceria Pro SDHC and SDXC memory cards, which are claimed to offer the world's fastest write speeds of all currently available SD cards. The Toshiba Exceria Pro series will offer photographers a maximum data write speed of 240MB/s , while the "regular" Exceria series will offer write speeds of up to 120MB/s. Pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed.

A New Flash by Years End? [CR2]

A replacement to the 430EX II?
We’re told a new flash could be announced before years end, though it wasn’t said whether or not it would be replacing an existing flash or being added to the lineup. The lineup does need a less expensive RT capable Speedlite.
We’re also told that the EOS M lineup will also get a new flash above the 90 EX. I think all it needs is the ability to bounce, not sure why they still make flashes that cant be tilted upwards.

Magic Lantern Improves 5D Mark III Dynamic Range to 14 Stops

The Magic Lantern team is letting the world know that they are at the beginning of a new function for the 5D Mark III and EOS 7D. Apparently they’ve figured out a way to boost dynamic range by 3 stops by using a new way of making a photograph by using ISO 100 for some of the vertical lines and ISO 1600 for the rest of it. Sounds wild to us, not sure how they’re doing that. There will be a process to combining the lines of 100/1600 ISO to give you the full resolution file.

• The functionality was not really in Canon firmware, but in the chip that samples the sensor. Canon firmware does not make any use of it (they just set both ISO “registers” to the same value). It was implemented on the hardware side though (and that’s why it works only on these 2 cameras, because only they have two ISO amplifiers).

Canon EOS 7D Mark II in 2014 [CR2]

Lots of talk
There is lots of talk about the successor to the Canon EOS 7D.  For the last 6 months we have written that the EOS 70D would move up rung in features in the EOS lineup, as such the EOS 7D Mark II will be doing the same thing.
We’re told two possible sensors are in play for the EOS 7D Mark II, the 20.2mp sensor in the 70D and a 24.1mp sensor that has yet to see the light of day. If they want separation with the EOS 7D Mark II and to charge a premium for it, I think moving beyond the sensor that will appear in the next Rebel, an EOS M camera and the EOS 70D is a good idea.
When is it coming?
It will not be shipping before the end of 2013, there is a possibility of an announcement before the year is out, but I’d say that is unlikely at this time. Timing could also depend on what Nikon is going to be doing with the D400. We’ve been told for ages that the EOS 7D Mark II will be an early 2014 camera.
We’re also told that 2 new “pro” bodies will arrive in 2014, and that doesn’t include the EOS 7D Mark II, which will be a pro specced APS-C camera.

The EOS 70D features a new 20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, designed and manufactured by Canon. It’s the first Digital SLR in the world to feature ground-breaking Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which delivers smooth and accurate autofocus (AF) when shooting Full HD movies and fast AF acquisition when shooting in Live View mode. Canon’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides swift AF performance when shooting in Live View mode and smooth accurate focus for Full HD movies. It makes it easy for users to take their next step with movies, enabling them to keep moving subjects in sharp focus and create professional-looking pull-focus effects. The technology utilises advanced CMOS architecture, allowing two photodiodes to be mounted within each pixel, both of which can be read independently to achieve autofocus, or together for image capture, with maximum image quality at all times.
An advanced AF system for stills includes 19 cross-type AF points spread across the frame, providing high speed, accurate AF – ideal for tracking sports and wildlife subjects as they move within the frame. Clever connectivity for easy control and instant sharing
The EOS 70D is the latest EOS model to feature integrated Wi-Fi, providing the freedom to remotely control the camera, as well as share images. Using Wi-Fi connectivity, users can connect to the EOS Remote app and control a wide range of image settings, including ISO and exposure, as well as focus and release the shutter. Photographers can also remotely use Live View mode, as well as review and rate their images.
Instant creativity unleashed
The EOS 70D features a host of creative modes to make capturing unique images easy. In-camera HDR removes the challenges of shooting in tricky, high contrast situations, merging three exposures into one that captures more detail in both the shadow and highlight areas. Creative Full HD Movies
Alongside beautiful stills, the EOS 70D allows photographers to create high quality movies with ease. Full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution video can be captured with a choice of selectable frame rates, including 30, 25 or 24fps, and 60 and 50fps at 720p, and a range of compression options for post-editing and sharing. Thanks to new Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Movie Servo AF mode tracks subjects as they move, or even as shots are recomposed, ensuring they’re always in focus. Alternatively, users can select different focus areas over 80 per cent of the frame** simply by tapping the touch-screen, even when recording – ensuring that movies stay sharp and clear if a subject moves or the user changes the composition of a shot.

EOS 70D Images Surface Early

A few Korean based images have appeared showing off the Canon EOS 70D. If you can translate the language, please do so in the forum.
We’ll be up until midnight EST for the launch of what looks to be a very well specced APS-C camera from Canon.
We haven’t yet heard about the build quality of the camera. Here’s hoping it’s weather sealed to some degree.
