Sigma Announces UK Pricing for New 120-300mm f/2.8 OS HSM Lens

Sigma UK has announced the suggested retail price of the new 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM lens. Featuring a focus limiter, newly developed USB dock, dust- and splashproof construction and a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture; the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM is part of the manufacturer’s “Sports” line of lenses. Incorporating 1 SLD and 2 FLD elements, the lens’ design also compensates for sagittal coma and minimises the blurring of a point light source in peripheral areas. This lens incorporates the OS system which, the company claims, offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The new Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM lens will ba available in Sigma and Canon fits from the end of February, with a Nikon version coming at the end of March. The SRP of the lens is £3,599.99.

Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd is pleased to announce that the SRP of the new 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM lens is £3,599.99. Sigma and Canon fit will be available by the end of February and Nikon fit will be available by the end of March.

Conventionally, large aperture lenses for 300mm F2.8 have been loved by professional users due to their brilliant capability of depiction and bright aperture value. It has established a solid standpoint in the world of photography. Based on the concept that turning a 300mm F2.8 lens into zoom lens would enable photographers to expand the scope of shooting, we have developed 120-300mm F2.8 lenses and released them into the market. It is not simple to decide on a composition with a 300mm lens. Especially for sports and theatrical shows, shooting positions are almost always fixed and changing lenses could lead to missed photographs. By adding a zoom function with the large aperture 300mm F2.8 lens, it no longer requires other interchangeable lenses and rotation of the zoom ring will offer excellent framing. This lens incorporates 2 FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element, and compensate for the color aberration at the utmost. 4. Incorporation of focus limiter
Excellent usability is achieved by incorporating inner focusing and zooming that requires no change in the length of the lens for focus and zoom. It is possible to use with a rounded filter, such as a Circular Polarizer, as the front part of the lens is fixed. Due to the focus limiter offering adjustable range of auto focusing, this lens can provide fast focus setting. The USB dock enables users to change the range of the auto focusing at the discretion of users’ creativity.

5. Newly developed “USB DOCK” exclusively for new product lines
Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus. We used to measure lens performance with an MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we’ve now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. Once the ambient light source is identified, and the appropriate color correction gel is selected, simply attach the gel to the flash.  Photographers should then set the camera to the same white balance setting as shown on the color correction gel in use, or set a custom white balance.

A First Glimpse of the Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS Extender 1.4x

Canon Singapore has published a first photograph of the long-awaited Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS Extender 1.4x, which, as its name suggests, includes a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. The photo was shared with this caption:

Sounds like the lens is indeed close to hitting store shelves after being announced in February 2011. It’ll reportedly cost around $11,000.

Philips, nuovi monitor ad alta risoluzione in arrivo nel 2013

L’anno nuovo si apre con interessanti novità che ci arrivano dal marchio Philips, entro marzo 2013 saranno lanciati due nuovi monitor ad alta risoluzione, adatti a chi vuole un pieno controllo delle fotografie che scatta. I due monitor in questione sono il 272P4 che è quello più classico, e il 298P4 che invece offre maggiori prestazioni.
Philips pensa agli utenti a 360° e ci propone i due nuovi monitor sia in versione professionale che consumer, in modo che ognuno di noi possa scegliere quello più adatto alle proprie esigenze e, soprattutto, alle proprie tasche. Il lancio ufficiale avverrà nel giro di qualche mese, ma dalle caratteristiche tecniche che sono trapelate questi monitor sembrano davvero interessanti.
Il modello 272P4 è quello più tradizionale, presenta un pannello da 27 pollici in tecnologia PLS con una risoluzione di 2.560 x 1.440 pixel. La profondità di colore è di 8 bit e la densità di pixel è di 109 ppi. Secondo i rumors dovrebbe coprire ampiamente, ed egregiamente, lo spazio colore sRGB. Questo monitor sembra essere particolarmente adatto a gli usa programmi di grafica, fotoritocco e CAD.
Il monitor 298P4 è più grande e sofisticato ha uno schermo di 21:9 da 29 pollici con un pannello AH-IPS da 2.560 x 1.080 pixel. E’ adatto a chi tiene aperte molte applicazioni ed ha bisogno di spazio sullo schermo. Con questo monitor Philips si rivolge soprattutto ai professionisti.
Entrambi i monitor Philips presentano la webcam con microfono e un sistema di funzioni multi-view che consentono di ricevere sullo schermo informazioni provenienti da sorgenti diverse. I prezzi non sono ancora disponibili.

Il flash Yongnuo YN-568 EX con HSS in arrivo dalla Cina

Yongnuo è un’azienda cinese molto promettente che negli ultimi anni ha proposto flash compatibili di elevata qualità a prezzi concorrenziali. Il marchio Yongnuo fa un passo in più e in ci presenta il primo flash cinese HSS che offre la sincronizzazione sui tempi veloci, una caratteristica che ancora mancava.
Il flash Yongnuo YN-568 EX è una novità assoluta, è il primo che supporta la modalità di sincronizzazione sui tempi rapidi, High Speed Sync, che supera il limite fisico dei tempi dell’otturatore della nostra reflex. Comprare flash da terze parti è sempre un compromesso, da un lato si spende un po’ meno a vantaggio dell’economia familiare, dall’altro capita di non avere tutte le funzioni disponibili, quelli cinesi in particolare non avevano mai supportato il sistema HSS. Per fortuna la tecnologia va avanti e anche Yongnuo si adegua agli standard sul mercato.
Yongnuo YN-568 EX è un flash ad elevate prestazioni, è una unità TTL che funziona in slave wireless che è disponibile per Canon o Nikon, si può usare in manuale ma anche slave ottica, pensate che sincronizza fino ad 1/8000 di secondo. Presenta un ampio monitor LCD, ha nuovi controlli, una presa syncro con jack da 2.5mm e inoltre permette di comandare in TTL altre unità speedlite in modalità SLAVE.
Se cercate un flash di ottima qualità ad un prezzo vantaggioso, questo YN-568 EX fa proprio al caso vostro. Il prezzo è un po’ lievitato rispetto agli standard Yongnuo , in Italia si aggira infatti sui 170,00 euro. Acquistate questi flash solo da rivenditori (italiani o almeno europei) che offrono delle solide garanzie sulla spedizione e su eventuali guasti provocati dal trasporto o da altro.

The price of the Samyang T-S 24mm f/3.5 ED AS UMC tilt-shift lens revealed in Russia

Samyang Russia published the price of the 24mm 1:3.5 ED AS UMC tilt-shift lens on their website: 34,090 rubles (around $1,100). For reference: the PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED costs $1,999, the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II sells for $1,949. The Samyang T-S 24mm f/3.5 lens is expected to be released in March, 2013.
Update: the lens is listed for €699.90 in Slovenia.

The new Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM lens rumored to be released next month

The new Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM lens (pictured on the left) is expected to be released in late January 2013 (probably during the CP+ show in Japan). The new lens will have an improved optical design and it will be 9mm shorter and  70g lighter then the current version (pictured on the right):

• 16 elements in 14 groups, 2 FLD, 1 SLD elements, 3 aspherical surfaces
• Minimum focusing distance: 22cm
• Maximum magnification ratio: 1:2.8
• Four stops OS
• Filter thread: 72mm

Nikon D7200, D9000 and D4x Rumors

Alongside the Canon 70D and 7D Mark II rumors, a Japanese magazine published its take on upcoming Nikon DSLRs for 2013. The Nikon D7200 (presumably following the Nikon D7000) is rated at a 90% probability with rumored specs that include a 24MP APS-C sensor, 39-point AF and ISO 25,600 sensitivity.
Another interesting rumor is the Nikon D9000, which is rumored to sport a 16MP APS-C sensor, 8-10fps frame rate and a 51-point AF system. Presumably this would be a step closer to the Canon 7D or what might otherwise be known as the Nikon D400 (oddly though, that model name does not appear on the rumor sheet). The magazine assigns the Nikon D9000 a 35% probability for 2013 release.

Rounding out the rumor mill is the Nikon 1 V3 as the next prosumer mirrorless model with a 75% probability. And, of course, the Nikon D4x with a 36MP full frame sensor captures a 30% probability for a 2013 release.

Canon 70D, 7D Mark II, EOS M2 and 1DSx Rumors

Several rumors of upcoming Canon DSLRs appeared in a Japanese magazine, along with what appears to be confidence ratings on the chance that they’ll surface in 2013. Atop the list are the Canon 70D and 7D Mark II with a 70% and 85% likelihood chance, respectively, that we’ll see them this year as obvious replacements to the current Canon 60D and 7D.  Key rumored specs for the 70D and 7D Mark II include a 24MP APS-C sensor and sensitivity up to ISO 25,600.

Other rumored cameras include a new mirrorless model, the EOS-M2, which is assigned a 80% likelihood for 2013 release, and an EOS-1DSx at a 50% coin flip and is probably the oft-rumored high-MP pro DSLR.

Flashpoint 500C LED Dimmable Light Review

The Flaspoint 500C LED dimmable light is a rather compact and affordable LED solution from Adorama. The light features 500 individual LED bulbs – 250 of which are daylight balanced and 250 of which are tungsten balanced.
The two sets of LED bulbs are controlled by two independent dimmer knobs. As a result, you have a fully dimmable light and a variable color temperature light. Both are pretty cool features for a $200 video light.

The unit is very lightweight, as it is made of plastic – 14″ wide x 7.5″ tall x 2.75″ thick. It features 4 adjustable barn doors with a reflective surface. The light is powered by the included AC adapter or, optionally, a V Lock battery. A stand mount attaches to any standard 5/8″ stud and tilts at the base. Additionally, a carry handle is fixed to the light on the top of the shell.
Another cool little feature on the Flashpoint 500C LED is the cold shoe rail on all four sides of the case. This allows you to mount the light from the top or bottom – or from either side. A smart little design addition for such a cheap light.

Overall, the light handles very well and is practically idiot-proof. I read a few customer reviews on Adorama’s site concerning faulty connections and general quality control issues with this unit and its daylight-balanced sibling, the Flashpoint 500 LED. I have yet to experience any problems with the light. Everything has worked as advertised since day one.
My only complaint with the Flashpoint 500C LED is a somewhat greenish tint when adjusted to the tungsten-balanced setting. This is not the first LED unit that I have experienced a green tint on a tungsten setting. I’m not sure if this is a common issue across all LED lights or only the cheaper models. I just haven’t used a broad enough range of LED units to make that general assessment. Regardless, there is a green tint issue with this light, which requires some work to balance it in post with other tungsten sources.

Interview Lighting Setup

I grabbed a few stills with my Canon 5D Mark II, which I use as a b-cam alongside the Sony FS100 for interviews.
These show my dummy that I use for lighting setups with both the Tota + umbrella lights and then the Flashpoint 500C LED at 3200K and 3700K in an attempt to manipulate the color cast in camera. Check them out below.

This green cast can be pretty simply corrected in post. And I’ll probably just duplicate and then modify my effect preset in Premiere Pro that I use to balance FS100 and 5D footage in order to clean up the green in both cameras. Accordingly, when I shoot with the Flashpoint 500C LED, I can just use the preset to balance both cameras to each other instead of stacking another effect or adjustment layer onto the balanced footage to accomodate the green cast.

I found the Flashpoint 500C LED to be plenty bright for single subject interviews. I used it in place of two Tota lights that shoot through a 60″ umbrella as a key light for one of my standard interview setups. I left in place a tungsten-balanced 250 watt hair light and a 300 watt rim light (cut down to about 1/2 power by a ND gel) in place, along with a 40″ reflector for fill.
Moving the Flashpoint 500C LED a little closer as the key got me the brightness level that I needed; however, since we’re moving to a smaller source, we’re losing some of the softness from the umbrella.

All in all, I’m impressed with what the Flashpoint 500 LED delivers even in spite of the green color cast. And, I’m very impressed with the price that Adorama delivers it.
While some of the customer reviews on Adorama’s site cause me a bit of concern with regard to the bigger picture of quality control, I’ve had several Flashpoint products myself and have had few problems with the gear. The one time that I had to return a Flashpoint product, Adorama was quick to respond and get a working replacement out the door.
With that in mind, I have no trouble recommending the Flashpoint 500C LED light to budget-minded video shooters.
