In addition to the rumored Zeiss Distagon 25mm f/2.0 lens, there could be a second new Zeiss Distagon 16mm f/2.8 lens:

“Oh, by the way, for those who’s interested in astrophotography and ultra-wide angle, Zeiss will be releasing a 15mm/2.8 soon, and it will be available in both ZE and ZF mount, for more details, please wait for Zeiss official announcement.”

Sony Japan has officially announced the discontinuance of the Sony A900 full frame digital SLR camera. The 24-megapixel Sony A900, which we praised for its high resolution, excellent viewfinder, robust build and intuitive controls, has been in production for three years, and is still available new on Amazon for $2,699.

PatchMatch: more Photoshop magic

After Content Aware Fill, here is a demo of another “Photoshop magic” developed by Adobe and Princeton called PatchMatch: Demos at graphics conferences are often interesting to watch because they offer a sneak peek at technologies that may soon become available to the general public. The video above is a demo for “PatchMatch“, an algorithm developed by researchers at Princeton and Adobe. Although you might be unfamiliar with PatchMatch, you’ve probably heard of its most famous feature: Content Aware Fill. Only a small piece of this amazing technology was introduced in Photoshop CS5, so the amazing image manipulations seen in this demo are likely a sneak peek into what we’ll be seeing in Photoshop CS6. Indagine LensRentals: non tutti gli obiettivi sono uguali

LensRentals è un colosso americano del noleggio di attrezzature fotografiche. Dato il tipo di attività che svolge possiede dozzine di esemplari dello stesso obiettivo ed è dotato di un sistema di collaudo Imatest per verificare lo stato del materiale prima e dopo la consegna ai clienti. Quindi per loro è stato facile effettuare una indagine sulle effettive differenze di resa degli obiettivi.
La produzione di un obiettivo è infatti un procedimento estremamente complesso ed artigianale, quindi è impossibile ottenere esemplari identici. Ma guardando il primo grafico in galleria, riferito alla risoluzione, si nota che il divario è davvero evidente. Non fatevi spaventare dal valore fuori dal coro: si tratta di un pezzo difettoso volutamente inserito nel test.
In galleria trovate altri due grafici di questa indagine: uno riferito all’accuratezza dell’autofocus ed uno in cui una sola lente è stata messa alla prova su più Canon 5D mark II. Anche in questo caso abbiamo risultati a dir poco altalenanti. Troviamo quindi una risposta alle perplessità che si hanno quando andiamo a confrontare i nostri scatti con quelli dell’amico con la stessa accoppiata di corpo e lente.

Quindi acquistare obiettivi di marchi di qualità come Zeiss e Canon, ovvero i produttori dei 100mm in prova nel primo grafico, non vuol dire avere l’assoluta certezza di immagini di alta qualità. Il fotografo dovrebbe quindi dedicare tempo a verificare il proprio corredo, magari calibrando con attenzione la precisione di messa a fuoco tramite accessori come il Datacolor SpyderLensCal, ovviamente sui corpi reflex che consentono tale operazione.

Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM, la recensione di Digital Picture

Dopo aver visto il primo obiettivo fisheye zoom più di un anno fa, Canon l’ha messo in vendita da circa un mese; scopriamo i dettagli e la recensione dedicatagli da Digital Picture. L’EF 8-15mm è un obiettivo speciale poiché condensa 4 lenti in una. Sia con le reflex fullframe, che con quelle che montano sensori di dimensione ridotta (APS-H e APS-C) le immagini che scattate avranno visuale fisheye a 180°; le macchine dotate di sensore a piena misura potranno in aggiunta ottenere immagini fisheye totalmente circolari. Prima non era possibile: servivano quattro diversi obiettivi diversi ed il formato APS-H non era neanche supportato.
L’ottima recensione di The Digital Picture si divide in più parti, proprio per la particolarità della lente, e analizza il comportamento dell’ottica su macchine con sensori di dimensioni diverse. Nello specifico è stata utilizzata una 1Ds Mark III per studiare il comportamento su una fullframe ed una 60D, invece, per testare la lente su un corpo APS-C. L’obiettivo presenta come apertura massima un valore di f/4.0, non è dotato di stabilizzazione, tecnologia che su questo tipo di lenti serve a ben poco. Sorprende la distanza minima di messa a fuoco, ora scesa a soli 15cm (rispetto ai 20 del precedente EF15mm fisheye).
Va ricordato, però, che la distanza di messa a fuoco è calcolata dal piano focale e non dall’elemento frontale della lente; all’atto pratico si potrà fotografare un oggetto a fuoco distante solo 3cm. Una lente del genere, chiaramente, ha un target ben preciso, e, a mio parere, non è di utilizzo immediato. L’eventuale difficoltà nell’utilizzo di quest’ottica è il tipo stesso; non sempre è così semplice ottenere buone foto con un fisheye se non si ha un occhio allenato, un obiettivo così ha bisogno di fotografi molto più creativi della media.

Nell’utilizzo con il paraluce (fornito in dotazione) sul pieno formato, addirittura, bisogna fare attenzione perchè ad estensione minima questo compare nel campo visivo. Il target ideale può essere, come suggerito dalla recensione, la fotografia di sport in condizioni estreme, come esempio gli sport invernali, proprio per la capacità di scattare avendo un enorme angolo di visuale.
Dalla recensione emerge come la lente sia stata realizzata con estrema cura da Canon e come, pur non potendo svolgere gli usuali test di distorsione o vignettatura per sua natura, presenti un’elevata definizione. L’obiettivo, come tutte le lenti della serie L Canon, presenta un’elevata qualità costruttiva racchiusa in dimensioni molto compatte. Il fisheye risulta essere la più piccola delle serie L attualmente in vendita, più piccola persino di focali fisse quali il 35mm. Il vetro frontale è trattato con un rivestimento al fluoro idrorepellente per facilitarne la pulizia.

Il prezzo è il linea con la qualità del prodotto offerto ed è di circa 1300€ sul mercato italiano.

Steve Jobs è morto, aveva 56 anni. Appena ventunenne aveva fondato Apple insieme a Steve Wozniak, cambiando per sempre il modo di pensare la tecnologia. La notizia è arrivata attorno alle 19.30 di ieri (l`1.30 in Italia) ed è immediatamente rimbalzata su Twitter e su Internet, in ogni angolo del mondo. L`annuncio nel comunicato di Apple.
"Siamo profondamente rattristati di dover annunciare che Steve Jobs ci ha lasciati. La sua passione ed energia sono state la fonte di innovazioni incalcolabili e che hanno arricchito e migliorato la vita di tutti noi. Il mondo è incredibilmente migliore grazie a Steve Jobs.
Il suo grande amore era la moglie Laurene e la sua famiglia. I nostri pensieri vanno a loro e a tutti coloro che sono stati toccati dal suo talento straordinario". Subito dopo, la conferma dei parenti: "Se ne è andato in modo sereno, circondato dalla sua famiglia. Sappiamo che molti di voi parteciperanno al nostro dolore e vi chiediamo di rispettare la nostra privacy in questo momento di lutto".
Durante una carriera durata oltre trent`anni, Jobs ha gettato le basi della moderna industria dell'high tech, contendendo la scena agli altri pionieri del settore come Bill Gates e Larry Ellison, i fondatori di Microsoft e Oracle. Proprio Gates è stato tra i primi a commentare: "al mondo raramente qualcuno ha il profondo impatto che ha avuto Steve, gli effetti del suo lavoro si sentiranno per molte generazioni".

Jobs aveva lasciato il timone di Apple lo scorso 24 agosto, con una lettera aperta al consiglio di amministrazione, nella quale avava designato anche il successore, Tim Cook, il suo braccio destro da 13 anni, il direttore generale che lo aveva sostituito già tre volte e che dal gennaio scorso era l'amministratore delegato supplente di Apple. Era rimasto come presidente del consiglio di amministrazione.
Per il momento nessuno parla delle cause della morte, forse è ancora troppo difficile parlare di un argomento su cui si specula da tanto tempo. A Jobs fu diagnosticato un tumore al pancreas nel 2004 dal quale guarì. Nel 2009 fu sottoposto a un trapianto di fegato. Poi sulla sua salute ci sono state solo indiscrezioni, soprattutto quando a metà del 2008 ha cominciato a perdere peso a vista d'occhio e quando ha preso un secondo periodo di aspettativa a partire da metà gennaio.
Nelle ultime settimane erano circolate su Internet foto che molti non avrebbero voluto vedere, ma che testimoniavano un aggravarsi delle sue condizioni. Il capitolo più produttivo della carriera del fondatore di Apple è stato quello che ha coinciso con la parte finale della sua vita, quando ha infilato uno dopo l'altro una serie impressionante di successi, lanciando la nuova generazione di computer MacIntosh, iPod, iPhone e iPad. L'ultimo arrivo proprio un giorno prima della sua scomparsa: la nuova versione dello smartphone, iPhone 4S, è stata presentata a Cupertino il 4 ottobre.

Sina, il portale web più popolare in Cina, ha creato una pagina per ricordare Jobs dove si legge: "Vivere è cambiare il mondo". Secondo il numero uno della giapponese Sony, "la sua creatività continuerà a ispirare".
COOK -  Il nuovo ad di Apple, Tim Cook, ha affermato che con Steve Jobs il suo gruppo "ha perso un genio creativo e visionario e uno straordinario essere umano". "Steve non si lascia solo dietro una compagnia che
soltanto lui poteva costruire, il suo spirito restera' per sempre nelle fondamenta di Apple", ha affermato Cook che ad agosto era approdato al timone del colosso informatico.
ZUCKERBERG - Mark Zuckerberg, giovane fondatore e presidente del social network Facebook, ha reso omaggio a Steve Jobs, il co-fondatore di Apple morto nella notte all'età di 56 anni, ricordandolo come un "mentore" e "amico". "Steve, grazie per essere stato un mentore e un amico", ha scritto Zuckerberg sul suo profilo pubblico su Facebook. "Grazie per aver mostrato che quello che hai costruito può cambiare il mondo. Mi mancherai", ha aggiunto Zuckerberg.

According to this FM forum post, Carl Zeiss will be releasing a new Distagon 25mm f/2.0 lens this month:

“Yes, I have an idea about the new 25. It will be announced in October, so keep an eye for the Zeiss website. And if everything goes well, delivery of the first production batch will be in Germany right before Christmas.”

The current Zeiss Distagon T 25mm lens has a f/2.8 aperture.

Fujifilm to Launch Mirror-less Camera

Fujifilm are set to enter the compact system camera market in the Spring of 2012. According to reports from attendees at an X10 press event in Japan, a prototype of a new mirror-less Fujifilm X camera will be shown at CES 2012 in January, ahead of a full launch later in the Spring. Optimum image quality is the intended aim, as “The clear objective in the development of lenses, sensor and processor technology (is) to achieve the highest image quality.”, according to a translated press release from the German website Photoscala. The new camera follows hard on the successful heels of the incredibly popular X100 (pictured).
Fuijfilm are also planning to release the XS-1 superzoom camera, which has a 2/3” EXR CMOS sensor and a 26x zoom lens, with a mockup on display at the aforementioned press event in Tokyo.

A Few More Nikon D800 Specs/Details

It sure hasn’t taken long for the Nikon D800 rumor mill to gather a full head of steam.  The latest rumors/leaks suggest ISO 100-6400 with expansion down to ISO 50 and up to ISO 25,600.  Again, that’s at 36MP.
Additionally, there will be a different version of the D800 without an antialiasing filter.  Along with the D800, we’re told to expect a couple of other product announcements as well (likely lenses).

DIY Tool Makes Focus Stacking a Breeze

Focus stacking is a technique for creating photos with a large depth of field by combining multiple photos with shallow depth of fields. One of the applications is in macro photography, where the technique is often used to make sharp images of tiny insects. Oleg over at Circuits@Home wanted an easier way to focus stack while shooting in the field, so he build a focus stacking assistant using Arduino. Given two focal points, the tool automatically takes a sequence of photographs, moving the focus slowly from one point to the other.
Oleg shares some details on how he created his EOS camera version, and says he’s also working on a Nikon version.

Apple iPhone 4S

Apple has just announced the iPhone 4S, featuring an all-new camera module. The Apple iPhone 4S has an 8-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and a 35mm (eq.) f/2.4 auto-focus lens comprising 5 precision lens elements, and features improved white balance, face detection and 1080p Full HD video capture with audio. Additionally, the new iPhone 4s inherits the LED flash and tap-to-focus functionality of the iPhone 4. The first 7 countries - including the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, Japan, France and Germany - will get the iPhone 4S on 14th October. Adobe Photoshop Touch for Android

At its MAX 2011 technology conference, Adobe unveiled Photoshop Touch, a new app for Android tablets running Honeycomb 3.1. “Adobe Photoshop Touch lets users transform images with core Photoshop features in an app custom-built for tablets,” the company says. “With simple finger gestures, users can combine multiple photos into layered images, make popular edits and apply professional effects… With Refine Edge technology from Adobe Photoshop, even hard-to-select areas with soft edges, such as hair, are easily captured when making selections.” The app will be available shortly, priced at $9.99. An iPad version is also in the making, although it will only be released after the Android variant.

Nikon 1 J1 & V1 Get DxOMarked

DxO Labs have published their detailed findings on the raw sensor performance of the new Nikon 1 J1 and V1 cameras. Although the two models share the same 10-megapixel, CX-sized sensor, the overall DxOMark Sensor Scores are slightly different (56 for the J1 and 54 for the V1). The company notes that “these differences are so small that they are well within the limits of measurement uncertainty and variances in manufacturing quality”. Interestingly, the Nikon 1 J1 achieved the exact same score as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3, despite having a significantly smaller sensor. A look at the individual components of the overall score reveals that the Panasonic G3’s imager has a lot better high-ISO performance but the Nikon sensor boasts a somewhat wider dynamic range and a slightly greater colour depth.

Rotor: A Concept Camera That Uses a Stack of Mode Dials

If for some reason you hate both buttons and touchscreens, then Rotor is a camera for you. It’s a concept camera designed by Charlie Nghiem that bases its entire user interface around a stack of physical mode dials. Rotate any of the dials, and the corresponding settings appear on the screen.

It will be interesting to see what those new cameras will be. For now only the Nikon D5100, D7000 and Sony A77 can take a full advantage of the UHS-I cards.

The Sony NEX-5N is the Sony’s latest entrant in its APS-C series of mirror-less interchangeable lens cameras and presents itself as a formidable upgrade from the NEX-5 that it replaces.
NEX-5N sports a new 16-megapixel CMOS sensor along with several upgrades over the NEX-5. It features a first curtain electronic shutter designed to substantially reduce shutter lag which also helps to raise the still shooting rate to 10 frames per second in speed-priority-continuous mode. For video shooters, the NEX-5N shoots 1080p at 60fps. Additional new features include expanded ISO range, in camera lens correction, and touch screen menus and camera control.

The 16-megapixel APS-C sized sensor in NEX-5N means no image quality compromise, and this housing is incredibly small and light.
NA-NEX5N delivers the advanced functionality of the NEX-5N in style and with the ergonomics that people have come to expect from Nauticam. Based on the highly successful NA-NEX5 housing, the new housing accommodates the changes in camera body and control positions for the NEX-5N. All of the NEX-5N camera controls available from the ergonomic grip sculpted into the side of the housing. The same Nauticam patented locking port release system used in the NEX-5 housings has been incorporated, allowing easy and secure port changes. Locking Rotary Latch
The housing back is sealed with an easy to operate safety clasp. A safety release button must be pressed in order to begin rotating the clasp, eliminating the chance of accidental opening.

At the Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum held in Taiwan, Samsung announced its new, fast 1/2.3-inch 16-megapixel CMOS image sensor. Featuring backside illumination technology and a 1.34-micrometre pixel pitch, the Samsung S5K2P1 sensor is designed for high-performance, advanced smartphones as well as digital still cameras and camcorders. Samsung’s S5K2P1 is an image sensor optimized for compact mobile CE devices, with excellent image quality in video mode. Supporting multiple interfaces, this image sensor is also suited for premium smartphones. The S5K2P1 sensor supports a native 16:9 format video at up to 8.3Mp resolution at 60 frames per second and maximum 16 Megapixel-resolution for point-and-shoot images at 30 frames per second without shutter lag effect.
Using Samsung’s advanced 1.34um BSI pixel technology, the S5K2P1 delivers excellent sensitivity and low-noise performances. The S5K2P1 also provides brighter and more vivid pictures even at night and dark indoor conditions.
According to market research firm TSR (Techno System Research), the digital still camera market is expected to reach 154 million units in 2012 where a substantial portion of up to 48.2 percent is forecast to be adoption of CMOS image sensors as the main sensor device.
Samsung’s S5K2P1 image sensor is currently sampling to select customers. Mass production for this imager is scheduled for November 2011.
