Sigma Has a Change of Heart, Won’t Ever Produce Its Own Mirrorless ILC

A couple of years ago, Sigma expressed a desire to create a mirrorless ILC of its own. And even though everybody and their mother in the camera industry seems to be jumping on the mirrorless bandwagon, Sigma instead is renegeing on that 2010 statement. In an interview with Chinese website Xitek, a Sigma manager stated that the company would never launch a mirrorless system.
Fortunately for Sigma lens enthusiasts, the company is still planning on developing mirrorless lenses for other systems, but it doesn’t look like we’ll be be seeing a mirrorless ILC announcement coming out of the Sigma camp anytime in the foreseeable future. For now I suppose we’ll just have to rely on Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Sony, Leica, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, and Samsung for our mirrorless needs… *sigh*

Manfrotto Introduces 290 Carbon Fibre Tripod Series

News image
Manfrotto has just announced the launch of the Manfrotto 290 Carbon series - a new family of carbon fibre camera supports designed for intermediate-level amateur photographers. “The Manfrotto 290 Carbon series is designed to be easily transported and carried: 290s are small when folded, but lightweight and very stable when open,” the company says. “For this model, Manfrotto developed a next- generation Carbon tubing: an innovative composite tube ideally suited to the needs of developing photographers, which draws on Manfrotto’s professional experience. It uses optimised fibre angles to provide consistent advantages of torsion/flexion rigidity and stability compared to aluminium tubing; advantages that have made carbon fibre tripods so understandably popular among professionals.” The Manfrotto 290 Carbon range includes a “legs-only” tripod, a monopod and a small selection of ready-to-use complete tripod + head kits, divided into two sizes.
Manfrotto Press Release
MANFROTTO LAUNCHES 290 CARBON FIBRE TRIPOD SERIES
Manfrotto introduces lightweight, versatile 290 Carbon Fibre tripods - the ideal supports to accompany photographers on the journey from hobby to profession
London,  27 July 2012 –  Manfrotto,  world leader in the design,  production and distribution of equipment and accessories for the photographic and imaging industry, has just announced the launch of the Manfrotto 290 Carbon - a new family of carbon fibre camera supports designed to accompany passionate new photographers as they progress and improve their skills.
At that level, no longer a beginner, but not (yet) earning a living from photography, it has always been difficult to find accessories and equipment that offer the right balance of performance, practicality and versatility. Many aspiring photographers find cheap “first tripods” are too flimsy and can’t be upgraded and that professional tripods have too many features, too many options and are too much of an investment.
Journeys to far-flung locations and spectacular holidays are often the triggers to taking photography more seriously, but it’s notoriously difficult to find a tripod that’s compact and light enough to travel with, but stable enough to prove effective when you get to your destination.
Lightweight, compact and transportable, without any sacrifice in camera stability
The Manfrotto 290 Carbon series is designed to be easily transported and carried: 290s are small when folded, but lightweight and very stable when open. For this model, Manfrotto developed a next- generation Carbon tubing: an innovative composite tube ideally suited to the needs of developing photographers, which draws on Manfrotto’s professional experience. It uses optimised fibre angles to provide consistent advantages of torsion/flexion rigidity and stability compared to aluminium tubing; advantages that have made carbon fibre tripods so understandably popular among professionals.
Versatile and customisable,  Manfrotto 290 Carbons help get great results across all photographic styles and situations
As photographers evolve and experiment with challenging genres such as macro, architectural, portrait, sports and wildlife photography, they find that each technique makes different and very specific demands of their camera and support equipment. Tripods that seemed ideal to start with can quickly become limiting.  Not the Manfrotto 290 Carbon:  even the kit tripods have pro-inspired interchangeable heads,  so a Manfrotto 290 Carbon tripod can adapt to the photographer’s requirements and be altered to suit any style of photography.
Durable and built for heavy-duty use, with no reduction in strength or performance over time
The Manfrotto 290 Carbon range is built to last. Its solid and strong aluminium leg levers have adjustable locking tension that can be tightened to ensure wear-proof stability and reliability. And with rugged aluminium castings, it’s almost certain to outlive the camera it was bought to support.
Creative and flexible, with positioning freedom to match its stability
Manfrotto has made sure that the Manfrotto 290 Carbons would give photographers the positioning flexibility and freedom to express creative ideas to the full. The Italian designers carefully fine-tuned the Manfrotto 290 Carbon build and features to provide a good min-max height range and quick leg angle selectors, so you can shoot in tight spaces, from high or low vantage points.
Just enough choice
The Manfrotto 290 Carbon range includes a “legs-only” tripod, a monopod and a small selection of ready-to-use complete tripod + head kits, divided into two sizes: the 294 models have larger diameter leg tubes and 3-section tripod legs for extra rigidity and vibration-resistance, while the more compact 293 model has narrower tubes and 4-section legs so it folds to an even more compact size.

Consisting of a tripod base and a small waterproof sensor that is attached to an armband, Soloshot allows users to mount a camera to a tripod and have it track their movements automatically. New SOLOSHOT Robotic Cameraman for Athletes, Parents and Filmmakers Automatically Rotates to Keep a Camera Pointed at Subject The new SOLOSHOT automatic cameraman tripod system lets athletes, parents, and filmmakers get video footage of the action without needing someone to hold a camera - it automatically keeps their camera pointed towards the subject. It is perfect for sports enthusiasts such as surfers, soccer or baseball players, water or snow skiers, skateboarders, those who race motorcycles, cars, or horses and more. Parents can film their kids playing sports while tech, gadget and professional videographers or filmmakers will benefit from the convenience of obtaining video footage without the assistance of another person – all at an affordable price. Through August 30, visit Kickstarter.com and pre-order a SOLOSHOT off the company’s new high volume, USA-based production line at a discounted price. Handmade San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) July 25, 2012 Soloshot Inc. today announced the launch of their automatic cameraman tripod system – SOLOSHOT – that turns almost any camera into an automatic tracking camera. SOLOSHOT consists of a tripod base and a small waterproof sensor that is attached to a comfortable armband. Simply mount a camera to the tripod base and slide the armband on to the subject. After an easy pairing sequence, the base automatically rotates as needed to continually keep the camera pointed at the subject wearing the armband. It is perfect for athletes who want video footage of themselves, but do not have someone available to film them; parents who want a hands-free way to film their child playing outdoor sports; and filmmakers who want an extra dynamic angle without breaking their budget or using the assistance of another person. Soloshot Inc. was founded by board-sport loving engineers Chris Boyle and Scott Taylor. Through August 30, customers can visit Kickstarter – the world’s largest crowd funding platform for creative projects – and pre-order SOLOSHOT off the new high volume, USA-based production line at a discounted price. Units also are available immediately on the SOLOSHOT website at the normal price. “We originally created SOLOSHOT to film our surf sessions from the beach because it was difficult to find friends willing to film us having fun for hours,” said Soloshot Inc.’s Co-Founder Chris Boyle. “Along the way, we designed SOLOSHOT so everyone from race car drivers to proud parents could enjoy getting great action video without needing someone to hold a camera,” concluded Boyle. “The response to SOLOSHOT has been great,” said Soloshot Inc.’s Co-Founder Scott Taylor. “We just initiated a Kickstarter campaign that will allow us to set up a high volume production line here in the USA, as we currently hand build each SOLOSHOT individually. As we grow, we plan to continue manufacturing ourselves in the USA – and our Kickstarter project will make this possible,” concluded Taylor. SOLOSHOT will track and film moving subjects at speeds as fast as 140 mph and at distances up to 2000 feet. Its maximum rotating speed is 40 degrees per second and the internal rechargeable batteries last more than five hours. The pairing sequence allows multiple SOLOSHOT systems to be used in the same location without interference. Any camera, up to five pounds, that can attach to a standard tripod will attach to the SOLOSHOT base. An LED on the base shines in the direction of the camera letting the user know the camera is still pointed at them. A custom waterproofing and shock-proofing technique, developed by Soloshot Inc., allows the armband sensor to withstand the most demanding ocean and sporting environments. The one-size-fits-all elastic armband strap is comfortable and made of non-corrosive nylon. The included professional tripod extends to five feet tall and features collapsible legs for easy traveling and has a wide stance option for windy days. The charger fits U.S. outlets and works with international outlets up to 220V with a standard adaptor (adaptor not included). SOLOSHOT is available for $479 at http://www.soloshot.com or on Kickstarter as low as $299. Like SOLOSHOT on Facebook.SOLOSHOTs also are available on SOLOSHOT.com with immediate shipping.

Valhalla, N.Y., July 25, 2012 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the premium, compact long-zoom FinePix F800EXR digital camera that features a new innovative Wireless Image Transfer function that allows users to quickly and easily upload high resolution images to their smartphone or tablet. The F800EXR continues the tradition of superior image quality that the F-Series is known for with its speed, bright lens, intuitive use and advanced features. The new F800EXR also now includes six built-in photographic filters for users to get even more creative with their photography.
The FinePix F800EXR, with Wireless Image Transfer, features a powerful 1/2” 16 MegaPixel EXR-CMOS sensor that delivers superior image quality and performance - especially in low light situations. The F800EXR also uses the bright and fast FUJINON 20x Wide-Angle long-zoom lens (25-500mm) that produces exceptional images, along with an Intelligent Digital Zoom feature that effectively doubles zoom capability and an ultra-clear 3.0” high contrast 460K resolution LCD.
New Wireless Image Transfer Function
Fujifilm’s innovative Wireless Image Transfer function allows users to connect their smartphone or tablet* to the F800EXR and upload high-quality images to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in seconds.
Connecting your FinePix F800EXR to any Android™ smartphone or tablet, or the iPhone™ or iPad™ is easy - all users have to do is download the free application “FUJIFILM Photo Receiver” to their device, then follow the simple instructions to get connected. To start uploading (up to 30 images per transfer), users press the F800EXR’s on-screen connect button to join to a device, then the images will be transferred to the Android™ smartphone / tablet or iPhone™ / iPad™ for easy sharing.
Then by downloading the free “FUJIFILM Camera Application,” the FinePix F800EXR is also able to record the user’s current location data provided by the smartphone or tablet’s location data (latitude and longitude), and display it on the F800EXR’s LCD. Users can also send their images to their smartphone or tablet to display on a map where images were shot. With a database of approximately 1 million landmarks worldwide, users can enjoy various functions, such as Landmark Navigator which displays the distance to a nearby landmark in the direction the camera is faced towards, and Photo Navigation which displays the distance from the photographer’s present location to the place where a tagged photo was taken.
“Sharing pictures has always been one of the most important things that people like to do with their images, and the new F800EXR allows everyone to do just that with its Wireless Image Transfer function,” said David Troy, director of marketing, Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, “With sharing this easy, consumers now have a better performing, full-featured compact digital camera that delivers the beautiful images that smartphones just can’t produce.”
Fantastic Built-in Photographic Filters: With its built-in photographic filters, users can now get even more creative with their photography. The F800EXR has six new filters: Pop Color, Toy Camera, Miniature, High Key, Partial color and Dynamic Tone.
EXR Auto mode with Motion Detection: Fujifilm’s advanced EXR-CMOS sensor enables the F800EXR to correct motion blur on three fronts with mechanical image stabilization, high ISO sensitivity and the new Motion Detection capability working together. In low light conditions with EXR Auto mode selected, the F-Series automatically identify if the subject is moving. If it is, the camera deploys Motion Detection and a higher ISO to ensure the subject is captured with reduced blurring. If no subject movement is identified, the EXR-CMOS sensor automatically keeps the ISO lower and uses image stabilization to reduce noise.
Users who prefer to take more control themselves can also choose from:
• EXR HR (High Resolution) priority mode – the sensor utilizes all of its 16 megapixels for the highest quality results.
• EXR DR (Dynamic Range) priority mode – takes two pictures and combines them to provide a wide dynamic range of up to 1600%.
• EXR SN (Signal to Noise) priority mode – pixels are doubled up to increase sensitivity and give better results in low light conditions.
Sharp, Clear 20x Lens: The FinePix F800EXR camera uses the FUJINON 20x Super Wide-Angle optical zoom lens that produces crisp high resolution results throughout the focal range, from 25mm wide-angle to 500mm telephoto, along with a Super Macro Mode that allow sharp focusing down to 5cm delivering the most brilliant detail possible.
I
mpressive Speed: With auto focus speeds as fast as 0.16seconds, the F800EXR delivers outstanding high speed shooting capabilities, up to 8 frames per second (fps) at full resolution (11fps max speed at medium resolution), and full HD movie capture at 1080p (30fps) in stereo.
The FinePix F800EXR offers these additional features:
• Intelligent Digital Zoom: With 20x optical zoom, Intelligent Digital Zoom delivers 40x total zoom, and 15x optical zoom extends to 30x total zoom.
• HD Movie Capture: Full 1080p HD quality, a mini HDMI port and stereo sound with a high speed movie option for freezing fast moving action at up to an incredible 320fps.
• Intelligent Image Stabilization: Intelligent Image Stabilization system provides further improved image quality with reduced blurring and noise in still pictures and even when shooting movies at the full optical zoom or in very low-light.
• Amazing panoramic shots: Enhanced Motion Panorama mode that allows users to capture beautiful, seamless 360° panoramic images both horizontally and vertically that show fine detail, low noise and high resolution at 180°, 240˚ or full 360˚ panoramic ranges.
• Tracking Auto Focus (AF): Tracks fast moving subjects so they don’t escape from the frame in a blur. Subjects will be tracked automatically for as long as it is kept in the frame and the shutter is half-pressed; when users fully press the shutter button your subject will be in the centre of the photo in perfect focus.
• Shoot in RAW: Images can also be captured in a RAW file for advanced creative work after shooting.
• Super Intelligent Flash: A flash control system which efficiently controls the level of flash for a given exposure to produce beautifully balanced flash illumination across the foreground and background.
The FinePix F800EXR will be available in August 2012 for $349.95 in black.

A New 100-400 & Coming Announcements

A New 100-400 & Coming Announcements [CR2]
More announcements coming
I’ve been told to expect two more announcements before Photokina begins in September. It’ll be a nice mix of DSLRs and lenses, as well as the usual PowerShot upgrades.
Bodies
We expect 3 more DSLR announcements before the end of 2012, however only two of the three may come before Photokina. One of the cameras will be the full frame camera we’ve talked about before.
Lenses
We still think a bunch of new lenses are coming down the pipeline from Canon. How many? By our count we hear at least 6 new lenses for the EF & EF-M mount before the end of  2012. Right now, we’re not sure how many before Photokina.
We were recently told that a new EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS was coming sooner than we originally thought.
All of this would leave us with a record year at Canon, with 6 new DSLRs and 13 new lenses.
EOS M
We do not expect any other EOS M bodies before the end of 2012. I do expect a lens announcement or two to rekindle the hype around the system when it hits the streets in October.

The company’s first ever compact system camera (CSC), the EOS M is designed for those who use photography to share their everyday passions – from photographing friends and family, to fashion and culture, food, music and art. Offering DSLR-quality imaging, creative features and Full HD movie creation in a compact and easy-to-use model, the EOS M is the perfect, take-anywhere partner for a new breed of enthusiasts who chronicle their lives through images, without necessarily considering themselves to be ‘photographers’.
The EOS M is available in sleek black, glossy white, stylish silver or bold red colours, and condenses Canon’s renowned EOS imaging heritage into a stylish, compact design. The model launches alongside two new lenses, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake and the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom, as well as a new compact EX Speedlite – the Speedlite 90EX – providing everything you need to capture stunning images every day. For those who want to push their images even further, the EOS M can also utilise Canon’s extensive range of over 70 EF lenses with the new Mount Adapter EF-EOS M, for even more creative freedom.
The quality of a Canon DSLR
Print your favourite moments in poster-size or crop your image for maximum impact –whether shooting the atmosphere of your favourite club or the intricate stitching of the latest must-have handbag – thanks to the EOS M’s high-resolution, 18 megapixel APS-C hybrid CMOS sensor. The large sensor also allows you to artistically blur the background for beautiful portraits, or for close-ups with impact.
With the inclusion of Canon’s DIGIC 5 processor, colours ‘pop’ and skin tones are beautifully natural, whilst a super-fast shutter allows you to capture split-second action. The atmosphere of evening shoots and challenging night-time scenes are also easily recorded in stunning detail thanks to the EOS M’s sensitive native ISO range of 100-12,800 (extendable to 25,600).
For pin-sharp shots and professional-looking footage, this new design features a Hybrid AF System that supports super-fast, accurate AF when shooting stills and movies – allowing you to record any moment with confidence.
Shoot what you see and easily express your creative vision
Every aspect of the EOS M has been designed to make it simple to capture beautiful, creative, high-quality images. From the very first swipe across the bright, high-resolution, 7.7cm (3.0”), Clear View LCD II Touch screen, the EOS M gives you as much or as little control over your photos as desired. Simply select different shooting modes and settings via the on-screen icons, or let Scene Intelligent Auto adjust the camera settings according to the subject and shooting conditions, leaving you free to focus on composition and selecting the perfect moment to hit the shutter release button.
EOS M users can shoot with the confidence that comes from having the world’s most comprehensive photographic system behind them. Whether you want to capture every detail of a close-up or zoom in to frame a subject in the far distance, any one of Canon’s extensive range of 70+ EF lenses can be connected via the new Mount Adapter EF-EOS M for photographic flexibility.
With one of Canon’s Speedlite flash units, you can also explore creative lighting techniques to add an extra level of interest to your shots. Alternatively, create unique images with a range of Creative Filters like Toy Camera effect, Grainy B&W or even a filter that mimics the distortion of a fish-eye lens. The filters can be applied before the shot is captured, with the result previewed in Live View, allowing you to experiment with different effects before selecting the perfect treatment for your final image.
Turn film-maker with EOS Movie and Video Snapshot
When a moment calls for more than a still image, the EOS M lets you switch easily to Full HD video with stereo sound for superb results. Video Snapshot mode also helps family and friends avoid long home movie viewing sessions, guiding you to create exciting movies in-camera, with a professionally edited feel.
Extending the EOS System with dedicated accessories
In addition to compatibility with Canon’s existing EF lenses (Via Mount Adaptor EF-EOS M), accessories and Speedlites, the EOS M launches with its own bespoke range of compact accessories. The Newest Camera in Canon’s Lineup Delivers Exceptional EOS Full HD Video Quality with Continuous Autofocus and an Expansive Selection of Lenses
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., July 23, 2012 – Combining the perfect blend of advanced video features and excellent still image quality in a convenient size, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the EOS M Digital Camera. Canon has made significant advancements in the realm of professional-quality HD video capture, from advanced CMOS sensor technology to smooth, quiet continuous autofocus. Inspired by EOS technology, the EOS M leverages these core technologies and distills them down to provide outstanding video capture capabilities while retaining high-quality still image capture. When shooting still images, the EOS M camera’s 18-megapixel APS-C-sized CMOS image sensor provides a shallow depth of field, incredible low-light image quality and a wide dynamic range to capture rich gradation and detail. This new addition to the EOS family offers a great solution to videographers and photographers of all levels, with two new lenses designed specifically for Canon’s new camera format - the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM kit lens and the optional EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens- and the ability to use the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses through the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.
“The EOS M includes a unique feature set making it an ideal movie-making tool, while also offering incredible still image quality on its APS-C-sized CMOS sensor. The camera’s size, image quality, advanced video capabilities and the versatility of Canon’s full lineup of lenses make the EOS M another great option to help our customers record and capture their creative vision,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.

An Advanced Video Capture Device
The EOS M utilizes Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF system to deliver fast autofocus speed for both video and photos. The Hybrid CMOS AF system truly shines when shooting video with EOS Full HD Movie mode including Movie Servo AF for continuous autofocus and tracking of moving subjects. The Hybrid CMOS AF system is located on the CMOS sensor itself and combines phase-difference AF and contrast AF to achieve operational stability, speed and precision. The Movie Servo AF function on the EOS M is enabled by default which keeps images on the rear screen in constant focus, even before the shutter is pressed. This continual focus makes for sharp video capture in a snap or to help reduce shutter lag due to focusing when still images want to be shot. The camera employs three AF methods for video and photos, Face Detection & Tracking AF, Multi-Point AF for automatic selection and Single-Point AF, where users select one of 31 AF points. Through the camera’s touch-panel operation, subject recognition and tracking is engaged at the touch of a finger, allowing users to track subjects accurately and focus on intended subjects with ease. In addition to subject tracking, the touch-panel LCD allows for simple, intuitive operation, menu navigation and touch features making it easy to shoot video and photos.
Thanks to Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) technology, when using either of the newly announced M-series lenses - the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM kit lens or the optional EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens - the AF system remains silent, helping ensure users only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS M also features manual audio level control to 64 levels, a built-in stereo microphone, which includes a wind filter and an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations. The EOS M records MPEG-4 AVC H.264 video as an .MOV file in a range of NTSC and PAL professional frame rates, including 1080p Full HD video at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) and 25p, 720p HD video at 60p (59.94) or 50p and Standard Definition video at 30p (29.97) or 25p.
In addition to the creativity afforded by over 70 compatible lenses, the EOS M also includes Picture Style settings - including custom Picture Styles - when shooting video, allowing users to adjust color settings the same as when shooting still images. The camera also includes Canon’s Video Snapshot mode for an easy way to record and create a fun highlight reel that can be easily shared. Video Snapshot mode combines a series of short video clips into a single file, all in-camera. Through the camera’s touch-screen controls users can delete, cut or re-order the clips in-camera for quick and easy editing.
Optical Diversity: New M-Series Lenses and Accessories
Along with the EOS M, Canon is also introducing two new M-series lenses - with new EOS M mounts -that include STM technology allowing for smooth and silent focusing when paired with Hybrid CMOS AF.
The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM kit lens is ideal for shooting video and still images. The fixed focal length lens has a great capacity for gathering light with an incredible aperture of f/2 and when combined with the camera’s APS-C image sensor, provides beautiful bright images and background blur for both video and stills. For more focal range versatility, Canon is also introducing the new EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, which provides videographers and photographers with a variable zoom range for general use with video recording or photographing. Both lenses are designed specifically for use with the EOS M digital camera.
In addition to the two lenses, any of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses can be used with the EOS M with the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M. The EOS M camera’s strong magnesium and stainless steel frame provide the durability and rigidity to support the full line of EF and EF-S Lenses in a lightweight convenient design. Using the adapter allows the camera to be fully integrated into the EOS ecosystem of lenses, adding creative options and versatility to this powerful camera.
Ideal for use with the EOS Mi, Canon is also announcing a new compact and lightweight flash unit, the Speedlite 90EX, designed for the photographer on the go. The Speedlite 90EX is capable of coverage for 24mm wide angle lenses (35mm equivalent) with maximum guide numbers of 30 feet (9 meters) at ISO 100. The flash unit can be controlled wirelessly for creative multiple flash shoots and uses the standard Canon EOS hot shoe mount for compatibility with all EOS DSLR cameras and PowerShot digital cameras that include a hot shoe.

Hybrid Ring Flash is the Frankenstein of the Lighting World

Okay — maybe it’s trying to reinvent the wheel, er, ring flash, but this could be an interesting gadget: Chinese company CononMark has unveiled a flash system that looks like a cross between a ring flash, speedlights, bracket flash and modeling lights.

Some of the flash highlights include four LED lights for video lighting or modeling lights, plus the four speedlight-like flash heads that can be positioned independently in different directions. The flash heads also include diffuser panels and bounce cards. Finally, the flash has a wireless triggering system via a transmitter that mounts on the hot shoe. It looks like it could be a versatile system with a lot of flash types packed into one device — though if you already own a ring flash, speedlights and brackets — it may be redundant or make more sense to own the items À la carte.
The CononMark iQ was presented at the Shanghai Photo & Imaging trade show this month, according to Lighting Rumors — and no word on the price or availability yet.

SpiderPro Camera Holster Review

SpiderPro Single Camera System
The Spider Camera Holster is a new way to carry your camera. With this system your camera will clip onto a belt, taking the weight off from your neck and shoulders. Personally, I dislike standard camera straps. So I was thrilled to have the opportunity to test out the Spider Holster.
I tested out the SpiderPro Single Camera System, which includes the SpiderPro Belt, the SpiderPro Holster, the SpiderPro Plate, and a SpiderPin, with a Canon 7D with battery grip, a 70-200 f4 IS, and430EX II Speedlite.
The SpiderPro Belt with Holster was very easy to adjust and get situated on my waist. The belt is adjustable via a velcro strap and is easy to switch the position from the right side of your body to the left side. The buckle is a triple lock type so you know that it will not randomly come unclipped.
Attaching the SpiderPro Plate and SpiderPin to my camera was simple. You line up the plate screw with your tripod socket, use the included hex wrench to tighten and you are done. With this plate you can still attach a tripod quick release for tripod use.
With the setup above, I found it very comfortable to move around, bend over, and squat down. I never felt that my camera was out of control (no worries about the camera swinging out to bonk someone on their head). It was always secure in the holster with very little movement on the pad.
Depending on your needs, the holster has a two-position lock. The lower position secures your camera in the holster each time you put it in. This lock is useful when you are moving between locations and want to guarantee that your camera stays where you put it.
The second position is the upper position, this disengages the lock for fast access to your camera. This is extremely useful when you need to make a quick adjustment to a subject or want to demonstrate a pose to a client/model.
Pros:
  • No neck strain
  • Easy access to your camera
  • Can still use tripod with the SpiderPro Plate attached to your camera.
  • Hands are free to demonstrate posing or fix hair/clothing
  • You get to feel like Han Solo
Cons:
  • No quick access to your pocket – though you can shift the belt around (I keep my extra formatted card pouch in my right pocket and my used card pouch in my left pocket)
  • Switching lenses (I would let my strap hold the weight of my camera while I switch out the lenses)
The SpiderPro system is great for photographers who like/need to move around like wedding, location, and sports photographers. If you are a primarily a studio shooter, I don’t see this system as a great benefit.
Overall, I found the Spider Camera Holster very comfortable and easy to use. I can see myself using this system for many of my upcoming sessions.
