News image
Nikon has launched its AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens, whose development was announced in the summer of 2012. Already tested by professional sports photographers at the London Olympics, the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is a super-telephoto lens featuring twenty elements in thirteen groups - including two ED and two fluorite elements -, an iris diaphragm with nine rounded blades and electromagnetic diaphragm control (hence the new “E” designation), and Nikon’s critically acclaimed Vibration Reduction system. Every Nikon AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens is supplied with the also-new TC-800-1.25E ED teleconverter - the first teleconverter to employ an ED glass element to correct chromatic aberration. The suggested retail price of the new 800mm Nikon lens is £15,599.99/$17,899.95.
Nikon Press Release
Go to great lengths with Nikon’s new AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens and dedicated teleconverter
London, UK, 29th January 2013: Nikon today launches a new super-telephoto, single-focal-length lens with dedicated teleconverter; the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR with AF-S TELECONVERTER TC800-1.25E ED.
The new lens uses high-end components and advanced technologies to lower weight, improve handling, and enhance image quality. It’s the first NIKKOR lens to use sophisticated technologies and materials such as electromagnetic diaphragm control and fluorite lens elements, alongside tried-and-tested features like Vibration Reduction and Nano Crystal Coat.
Boasting the longest focal length in the NIKKOR range, this premium lens is an ideal choice for professional sports and press photographers. When moving nearer to the subject is not an option, the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR delivers the extra reach that brings the subject closer to the camera.
“This lens has been developed with the demands of the most discerning professional photographers in mind,” says Hiro Sebata, Product Manager, Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon UK. “Not only is the lens lighter than most other super-telephoto lenses, it is packed with new NIKKOR technologies and features a custom-tuned teleconverter to extend the lens’s focal length and ensure that it rightfully occupies the flagship role in our super-telephoto lens lineup.”
Nikon announced the development of the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR in the summer of 2012. Prototypes of the lens were displayed at Photokina in Cologne and tested at major sporting events, where they received highly positive reactions.

Lightweight body with fluorite elements

For a lens that delivers such extreme reach, the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is surprisingly light and well-balanced. This has been achieved by manufacturing the body from a lightweight, rugged magnesium alloy, and by crafting an improved optical construction that includes two fluorite elements.
The optical system contains a total of 20 elements in 13 groups, including two fluorite and two ED elements. Using fluorite for the front two elements makes the lens’s front portion lighter, and shifts its centre of gravity to the rear, ensuring comfortable handling and stable operation. The fluorite elements also deliver superior optical performance, achieving high transmission rates with minimal chromatic aberration and much lower dispersion properties than even super ED glass. Nikon’s antireflective Nano Crystal Coat is employed to ensure clear images with minimal flare and ghosting.
The lens also includes a curved meniscus protective glass, and is supplied with a 52mm NC filter. There’s even a convenient slip-in 52mm filter holder located at the back of the lens.

Highly accurate electromagnetic diaphragm control

The electromagnetic diaphragm reliably achieves highly accurate aperture control with an extremely low incidence of errors. This precise mechanism also provides enhanced stability in auto exposure control during continuous shooting, and increased accuracy—especially when the lens is used with its teleconverter, requiring double aperture linkage.
To improve stability, the VR (Vibration Reduction) mechanism provides compensation equivalent to a shutter speed approximately four stops faster. Normal and Active VR modes deliver stable shooting for different amounts and rates of camera movement, while automatic tripod detection reduces vibration from shutter release when the camera is mounted on a tripod. The AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR also has an integrated tripod foot for improved balance when attached to a tripod.
The lens incorporates SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for fast, accurate focus acquisition. Three focus modes are employed: A/M (autofocus with manual override, AF priority mode), M/A (switch from autofocus to manual operation in any AF mode instantly), and M (manual).

Dedicated teleconverter

Every AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is supplied with an AF-S TELECONVERTER TC800-1.25E ED—the first teleconverter to employ an ED glass element to correct chromatic aberration, an issue to which long focal length lenses are especially prone.
Developed exclusively for use with the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR (not sold separately), each teleconverter is custom-tuned with the individual lens in order to maintain its superior optical performance, while extending the lens’s focal length to 1,000 mm.
The lens and its dedicated teleconverter are supplied in a hard carrying case (TC-801) for convenient, safe transportation.

About the stepping motor
The stepping motor’s actuator allows finely tuned control of angular rotation, and since it drives the focusing mechanism directly without an intermediate reduction gear, it also provides superbly quiet performance.
VC (Vibration Compensation)
Tamron’s VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three ceramic balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the ceramic balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. As the VC lenses can be moved in parallel only by electrical control, the mechanical structure is simple, enabling downsizing of the lens body.

The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm 1:4.8-6.7 II telephoto lens boasts the high focal lengths that bring far-away objects vividly to life with superb-quality close-ups. Olympus has redesigned the lens to match the distinctive OM-D E-M5 and PEN series cameras, but like its predecessor it still boasts first-class components including the MSC mechanism and the new, advanced ZERO lens coating. Together these deliver outstanding image quality even in bright light. Compared to previous lenses of this calibre, at £499.99 the price is very competitive. This state-of-the-art lens goes on sale in March 2013.
Power in your pocket
The compact M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm 1:4.8-6.7 II weighs just 425 grams but still features extraordinary optical engineering that opens up a swathe of creative shots. Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion), ED and HR (High Refractive index) lens elements benefit from the ZERO coating that effectively eliminates ghosting and flaring across the entire zoom range, even in bright light. Professional-looking bokeh is one of the main attractions of any high-quality system lens, so Olympus fitted a circular aperture that ensures smooth and even background defocusing. The autofocus mechanism is extremely fast thanks to MSC (Movie and Still Compatible) technology that is also near silent, making this lens ideal for capturing pristine HD movies as well as stills.

The new and updated Sigma lenses include the 30mm F1.4 DC HSM, which will be available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts.
30mm F1.4 DC HSM
Sigma pioneered the large-aperture, APS-C format, standard lens category with its 30mm F1.4 lens in 2005. With new optical configurations of nine elements in eight groups, as well as rounded aperture blades, this updated lens delivers pleasing sharpness and a beautiful bokeh background. Its angle of view is equivalent to 45mm on a 35mm camera (which is similar to that of human vision), its minimum focusing distance is 11.8 inches and its maximum magnification ratio is 1:6.8. The lens’ optimized power distribution helps to minimize field curvature, prevent a loss of image quality at the edges of photographs and produce outstanding image quality. Its double-aspheric lens minimizes spherical distortion, astigmatism and coma, and its rear focus system prevents focus-dependent variation in aberration. Together, the new optimized auto focus (AF) algorithm and rear focusing system ensure smooth and accurate focusing. At CES 2013, Rode unveiled the iXY mic, a new stereo mic unit designed for iOS devices that captures up to 24-bit/96kHz audio directly to your iPhone or iPad. The iXY is fitted with a matched pair of 0.5″ cardioid condenser mics aligned at 90-degrees for optimal stereo recording.
Rode iXY Mic
Check out the Rode iXY overview video below from CES 2013.
The Rode iXY mic has a lot going for it outside of the HDSLR video realm. Think about how many TV interviews you see where reporters are in the field and shoving an iPhone in someone’s face. Likely, a lot of that is a situation of convenience.
The iXY looks like it’s going to make carrying the iPhone so much more convenient for those reports. And it will be even better when Rode polishes off their app with the ability to put your customized logo on the display to be seen by every camera that’s shooting the same subject.
Rode iXY Mic
Moving on over to the HDSLR side of things though, Rode has made the iXY with HDSLR shooters in mind – as evidenced by the iPhone mount that slides into your camera’s hot shoe. You can also send a scratch track from your iPhone to your camera’s mic input for syncing with the final audio in post.
Rode iXY Mic
When you are finished with your recording, you can editing your clips in the Rode Rec iOS app, which includes the ability to add fades, import other audio and add effects. When the edit is complete, you can share the final product via SoundCloud, Dropbox, FTP and iTunes.
There are two versions of the app: Rode Rec is available for $5.99 on the iTunes App Store, while Rode Rec LE is free and has limited functionality.
Rode iXY Mic
The Rode iXY retails for $199 and should be shipping later this month. Check availability direct from Rode and here at B&H Photo.

SIGMA Photo Pro 5.5

News image
SIGMA Photo Pro 5.5 now offers a specialized mode to process the RAW data of the SIGMA Merrill cameras for the creation of monochrome photography. Sigma and Foveon have added a new monochrome mode to Sigma Photo Pro, allowing photographers to create monochrome photographs with RAW data and full RGB data for each pixel. The SIGMA Photo Pro 5.5 for both Windows and Macintosh OS will be available in February.
Sigma UK Press Release
SIGMA Photo Pro Monochrome Mode
The Sigma Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki) is pleased to announce that SIGMA Photo Pro opens up an exciting new world of photographic expression by developing a specialized mode to process the RAW data of the SIGMA Merrill series for the creation of monochrome photography.
Sigma Photo Pro is an exclusive software package for displaying and manipulating, on your computer, the images taken with Sigma digital cameras. User friendly, this software allows a creator to express the exact intention by simply moving the slider for the basic parameters, such as exposure, contrast and sharpness. Sigma and Foveon have added a new monochrome mode to Sigma Photo Pro, allowing photographers to create monochrome photographs with RAW data and full RGB data for each pixel.
The Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor is the full colour image sensor that uses three layers of photodiodes to gather the entire red, green and blue colour information of light. It requires no colour filters or any compensation, and offers highly sharp and natural image. Since colour moiré is not generated, the use of a low-pass filter is not required, resulting in superior image quality. As there is no gap between color resolution and brightness resolution, it also enhances the rendering performance.
Unlike conventional sensors, the Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor requires no colour interpolation process. The benefits of this system are particularly apparent in the high-frequency range, which is difficult to replicate. As a result of these advantages, Sigma’s full-colour capture system produces richly detailed Monochrome images with a wide dynamic range from highlight to shadow. It creates ultra-high-resolution images simulating high ISO, such as ISO1600 and ISO3200, with minimal noise. In addition to amazing resolution, photographers can expect smooth, beautiful gradations and superior representation of light and shadow. Sigma Photo Pro brings full creativity to photographers, allowing them to express themselves easily and accurately and to enjoy all that true monochrome photography has to offer. Sigma’s full colour RAW data, able to generate colourful images, can now develop rich, detailed monochrome pictures as well.
Editing Options for the Next Level Monochrome Pictures
Colour Mixer
This function alters the RGB proportions across the entire image. Different from a contrast adjustor, it allows the photographer to realize his or her vision. This function makes possible monochrome photographs that appear to have been shot with colour filters.
Film Grain Effect
This function replicates the graininess of classic film. The size and roughness of the grains can be adjusted.
The SIGMA Photo Pro 5.5 for both Windows and Macintosh OS will be available in February.

Polaroid iM1030 / iM1232 / iS2433 / iD975

News image
In addition to the Android-powered iM1836, Polaroid has announced two more CSCs, a bridge camera and a camcorder. The Polaroid iM1030 ($299) and Polaroid iM1232 ($349, pictured) are similar to the iM1836 in being interchangeable-lens models (which Polaroid confusingly refers to as “Micro Four Thirds bodies,” even though their sensors are apparently smaller than a regular Four Thirds imager, and the cameras require an adapter to mount MFT lenses), but lack the Android OS that makes the iM1836 truly special. Nonetheless, the Polaroid iM1232 offers built-in Wi-Fi allowing users to instantly upload and share photos on their favourite social networks. Apart from these differences, the three models appear to be quite similar, featuring 18.1-megapixel sensors, 10-30mm kit lenses and 3.5” rear displays.
The company is also launching a bridge camera called Polaroid iS2433 ($199), featuring a 25-600mm equivalent superzoom lens and back-illuminated 16.1-megapixel Sony CMOS sensor; and a camcorder (Polaroid iD975, $249) with 10x optical zoom, capable of shooting Full HD video and 16-megapixel stills.
