Hasselblad’s new A5D aerial camera range set for launch

Hasselblad is set to launch a new 'ultimate image quality' A5D System aerial camera range with no internal moving parts. The innovative A5D cameras will offer global customers in the mapping, surveying and systems integration sectors latest Hasselblad capture technology and unparalleled lens options.

The series takes off with three sensor options: a CCD-based A5D-40 and A5D-60 and a CMOS-based A5D-50c - and the company has plans for more to follow.
Perry Oosting, CEO: "The A5D is an important breakthrough for us in what is a fast-growing and demanding global 'special applications' segment. Hasselblad has a very long history of working with speciality photography segments and the development of new technologies. Back in the 1940s the very first Hasselblad camera was an aerial camera. The Swedish government asked Victor Hasselblad if he had the skills to produce a camera identical to one that had been captured. Victor famously said: 'No, but I can make a better one'. That is a mantra that still exists at Hasselblad today."
Hasselblad have found a solution to the vibration challenges of aerial photography by completely re-engineering their cameras with no moving internal parts. This solution is designed to prevent any unintentional movement that may occur due to aircraft vibration. The result is unrivalled airborne stability; total reliability; a lighter body and ultimate image quality. In tests it has been proven that Hasselblad's H-System lenses outperform any other lens available on the market today. Hasselblad have nine focal lengths available in aerial versions, complete with secure locking mounts to ensure the image and sensor stay parallel at all times.
Hasselblad's brief to its engineers was to develop a redesigned aerial photography platform capable of providing customers with the highest possible resolution over a large target 'footprint' area on the ground. The new A5D cameras have been engineered with three new connectors located on the top of each body - enabling easy user control via the plane's flight management system.

Sony Press Release Sony Introduces the α7 II, the World's First Full-Frame Camera with Optical 5-Axis Image Stabilization Sony - Nov 20, 2014 11:55 GMT Today Sony announces the α7 II (ILCE-7M2), the next in the α7 series of interchangeable-lens models and the world’s first camera with optical 5-axis image stabilization designed for a full-frame image sensor. The camera offers outstanding image quality in a compact size and light build, and carries on the traditions of the α7 series, which includes the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable-lens full-frame camera (α7R). Featuring a 24.3 effective megapixel 35 mm full-frame Exmor® CMOS sensor that moves along five axes to compensate for camera shake, providing optical image stabilization equivalent to up to 4.5 steps faster shutter speed of correction[ii] for still images. Shooting sharp handheld stills and video is now possible under conditions that may have required a tripod in the past. In this and other scenarios, users can enjoy beautifully rendered images from the full-frame sensor with the convenience of image stabilization. In-camera image stabilization also offers sharper images for those using A-mount lenses on an optional lens adapter. World’s first full-frame camera with optical 5-axis image stabilization Detects and corrects various camera shake along five axes for still images and video, including angular shake (pitch and yaw) that tends to occur when shooting with a telephoto lens, shift shake (along the X and Y axes) that becomes noticeable as photographing magnification increases, and rotational shake (roll) that often affects shots at night or when recording video. The full-frame image sensor moves to compensate for these kinds of camera shake. For still images, stabilization is equivalent to up to 4.5 steps faster shutter speed of correction. Optical 5-axis image stabilization ideal for a variety of αTM lenses[iii] Handheld low-light shooting at slower shutter speeds becomes possible, allowing for greater creativity and mobility without the need for a tripod. The camera’s in-body image stabilization is therefore effective even in combination with E-mount lenses without Optical SteadyShot (OSS). For A-mount lenses as well (using an optional mount adapter such as LA-EA4 or LA-EA3), camera shake is compensated for along five axes within the camera body. Users can therefore make the most of the beautiful rendering power of various α lenses with the α7 II. Verify image stabilization results with live view functionality Monitor the corrected image in real-time on the camera’s LCD screen or in the OLED viewfinder, allowing for fine-tuned framing and focusing even when using a telephoto or macro lens. Speedy, accurate autofocus with Fast Hybrid AF Wide AF coverage with the employment of a 117-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor (in combination with a 25-point contrast detection AF points) 117-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor and 25 contrast detection AF points are placed over a wide area of the screen, making use of the superb tracking capabilities of the phase detection AF and therefore enabling clear capture of moving subjects that might otherwise evade focus. 30% faster AF responsiveness[iv] A more advanced algorithm is used to detect the subject position, enabling optimal lens drive. In a variety of scenarios, autofocus is very responsive – 30% faster than in previous models. 1.5 times the tracking ability of previous modelss with an improved motion-prediction algorithm An improved, original Sony algorithm for the prediction of moving bodies results in a 1.5 times improvement in performance in tracking a subject and predicting its next movement. Additionally, AF and automatic exposure (AE) continue to track the subject during high-speed continuous shooting (up to 5 fps), so that a sudden movement or expression of the subject is never missed. Finally, greatly improved tracking ability and subject capture are made possible through the advances in image analysis technology with “lock-on AF,” a feature that optimizes focusing on the subject in accordance with its size. Superior image quality and enriched video recording functionalities with the full-frame sensor and BIONZ X™ image processing engine 35 mm full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor for high resolution and sensitivity, with minimal noise The camera is equipped with a full-frame Exmor CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.3 effective megapixels. High resolution and larger pixels enhance sensitivity and reduce image noise to release the full potential of lens’ optical performance. Images are rendered beautifully and bokeh effects attainable only with full-frame sensors become possible. BIONZ X image processing engine for superb detail and natural textures, less noise Loaded with an advanced BIONZ X image processing engine. The fast processing enabled by this engine enhances images in several ways, through “detail reproduction technology,” which recreates natural-looking textures even in the minute details of an image; “diffraction-reducing technology,” which prevents loss of detail when aperture stopped down; and “area-specific noise reduction,” which greatly reduces noise while maintaining exceptional detail and texture even under low light conditions such as night time and indoors. Supports high bit rate XAVC-S recording In addition to recording in AVCHD Ver. 2.0 Full HD (1920×1080) 60p (50p)/60i (50i)/24p, the camera records in XAVC-S, a consumer format derived from the professional XAVC® format.[v] This offers outstanding Full HD video quality at a high bit rate of 50 Mbps. Long GOP compression is used, targeting differences between frames, along with the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec for video. For audio recording, linear PCM is used and files are saved in the MP4 format. Full-featured video recording that suits professional workflows Picture profiles enable convenient in-camera tone adjustment. The α7 II also supports the S-Log2[vi] gamma function, which preserves a wide dynamic range, and a wide S-Gamut mode. Other features include Time Code/User Bit (useful in editing), Rec Control (for synced recording with compatible external recorders), marker display/settings, and dual video recording. Enhanced usability and reliability Refined usability Grip shape and height keep the camera steady even when using a large telephoto lens. The shutter button has been shifted toward the front, to a position that feels more natural for the user. This, along with the button’s increased size, helps reduce camera shake. Shooting comfort and convenience were a priority in design. Ten customizable buttons can be assigned to any of 56 functions. The tilting display features a White MagicTM LCD screen for exceptional visibility even under bright sunlight. Sharp, high-contrast XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ viewfinder for accurate previewing An XGA OLED Tru-Finder viewfinder with a 2.36 million dot equivalent resolution and high contrast, enabling faithful reproduction of setting adjustments, fine-tuned focusing using magnified display or peaking features, and bokeh effects. The viewfinder also allows for clear review of previous shots. Because the camera is fully APS-C-compatible, it displays the entire view even when APS-C lenses are used. Reliability that professionals can appreciate Sturdy magnesium alloy construction of the top, front cover, and internal structures ensures that the camera is both durable and light. The robust mounting structure easily handles large telephoto lenses and heavy video lenses. Main buttons and dials are also sealed to help keep out moisture and dust, and an interlocking double layered construction of media and port covers as well as body seams ensures greater moisture and dust resistance. The camera is designed to be used by photographers in any number of situations without having to worry about the safety of their cameras. Quick startup time – 40% fasteriv After the camera is switched on, it is ready to shoot 40% sooner than current models. Wi-Fi and NFC enabled for connectivity with mobile devices; support for PlayMemories Camera Apps that allow the camera to evolve even further - Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity for mobile linking - Features can be expanded with PlayMemories Camera Apps By installing an updated Lens Compensation app (enabling the storage of lens information in Exif data, compensation of recorded video, and import/export of lens compensation values), users can manually set correction values for lens peripheral shading, chromatic aberration, and distortion. Tiffen XLE Filters

News image

Tiffen have announced a brand new range of long-exposure filters that allow stills photographers to capture extreme long exposure images without incurring the red colour cast that occurs when photographers use high-density ND filters to shoot long exposures during daylight hours. Many camera sensors are sensitive to infrared wavelengths when they are exposed for prolonged periods and record this light as a slight warm red tint on some sensors, to an extreme red tint on other sensors in very bright conditions. The Tiffen XLE series comprises 3 different 10-stop reduction filters with varying infrared-cut characteristics, ranging from nothing in the XLE aXent (£28.99 - £103.99), to moderate in the XLE advantiX (£49.99 - £129.99) to complete infrared suppression in the XLE apeX (£78.99 - £168.99). These new screw-in filters are available from December, in sizes ranging from 40.5mm to 82mm.
Tiffen Press Release
Tiffen International Present the Incredible XLE Series of Filters.

10-stop long exposure range aimed at preventing, controlling and enhancing red-tinted images.

Tiffen International Ltd have today, announced a brand new range of long exposure filters that allow stills photographers to capture extreme long exposure images without incurring the red colour cast that is common with some other long exposure filters.

The XLE series comprises of three different 10-stop reduction filters with varying infrared-cut characteristics, ranging from nothing in the XLE aXent, to moderate in the XLE advantiX to complete infrared suppression in the XLE apeX.
The series has been designed to overcome the problem that occurs when photographers use high-density ND filters to shoot long exposures during daylight hours.
While standard ND filters block visible light, to allow for long exposure times such as 30 seconds, that softens moving water or adds atmospheric blur to clouds. Standard ND filters don’t block infrared light. Many camera sensors are sensitive to infrared wavelengths when they are exposed for prolonged periods and record this light as a slight warm red tint on some sensors, to an extreme red tint on other sensors in very bright conditions. This is because during the course of a 30 second exposure the amount of infrared light reaching the sensor becomes significantly greater.
These new screw-in filters are available in sizes from 40.5mm to 82mm.

The XLE Series of Filters will be available across Europe from selected retailers from early December.

Breakthrough Photography announces a new line of professional Neutral Density and UV filters with ‘Traction’ frame designs, glass from Germany and Japan and more
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – Nov. 10, 2014 – Breakthrough Photography announced a new line of 3.2mm ultra-slim ‘Traction’ filters featuring glass from Germany and Japan, advanced coatings and weather-sealed construction.
Aimed at professional as well as amateur photographers, the new X-Series filter lineup features a new ‘Traction’ frame design with state-of-the-art optics and coatings.
The X-Series filters are immediately available for pre-order on Kickstarter with a December 2014 delivery schedule. Pre-ordering and product information can be found by visiting the companies website at http://www.breakthrough.photography/
THE X-SERIES FILTERS
The X-Series filter lineup consists of 3 different models:
X3 Traction Filter features the company's signature 3.2mm ‘Traction’ frame CNC machined from brass, SCHOTT B270 glass from Germany, MRC16 and dual nano coating layers. Available in 3-stop, 6-stop Neutral Density and UV.
X2 Traction Filter features a 3.5mm ‘Traction’ frame CNC machined from aluminum, AGC glass from Japan, MRC8 and dual nano coating layers. Available in 3-stop, 6-stop Neutral Density and UV.
X1 Flat Black Filter features an ultra-slim 3.5mm standard flat black frame with MRC4. Available in UV.
All X-Series filters are double-threaded, weather-sealed and backed by a 25 Year Ironclad Guarantee.
TRACTION FRAME DESIGN
“We really tried to take the legacy standard flat black filter design back to the drawing board to really understand what it was that photographers needed in order for a filter to be most effective. Of all the various prototypes and frame materials, the ones with texture in the metal were the clear winners among photographers” said founder and photographer Graham Clark.
The X2 and X3 filters feature a new filter design which incorporates texture in the metal achieved by CNC machining brass and environmentally friendly aluminum.
“When I first felt these traction filters I thought, ‘Why don’t all filters have this?’ It makes getting filters on and off a whole lot easier.” said acclaimed outdoor and nature photographer Art Wolfe.
DESIGNED FOR WIDE-ANGLE FULL-FRAME SETUPS
“During our extensive field tests we found 4mm filters on 16mm lenses produced on average +1 stop of light falloff. At 3.7mm the vignetting was entirely eliminated on our full-frame setups. Our standard flat black X1 and X2 traction filters have 3.5mm, whereas our X3 traction filters are machined down to 3.2mm.” says Clark.
Worldwide Pricing and Availability
The X-Series filters will be available for pre-order on Kickstarter on November 6th, 2014.
Breakthrough Photography will be offering a one-time launch price of 50% off MSRP. The X-Series filter lineup will be sold through B&H, Adorama and Amazon.com in December, 2014.

Lumera Launches

News image

Lumera is a new device which connects your camera to your smartphone via Wi-Fi and BLE allowing you to back up and share your photographs wirelessly, without taking the phone out of your pocket. This novel accessory communicates with the camera via USB and attaches to the tripod socket, so after the initial setup you can pretty much forget about it while shooting. Additionally, the accompanying Android/iOS app enables you to wirelessly capture photos & videos, remotely view and edit camera parameters like shutter speed, ISO, focus and zoom area, white balance, drive mode, aperture, image quality etc., wirelessly stream the camera's live iew feed to your iOS or Android device, geotag your photos and more. Lumera is available for pre-order through Kickstarter from $125.
Lumera Press Release
Montreal, October 29, 2014. Lumera Labs has just released Lumera on Kickstarter, a new device that transforms cameras into the smartest ones (lumera.co/ks). Today’s manufacturers create amazing DSLR and mirrorless cameras with really big sensors and stunning lenses, which give users high quality images, but most of them don't provide a connection to the cloud. On the other side, phone manufacturers create amazing devices completely immersed in the cloud but with poor optics giving users low quality images.
Lumera is closing this gap by connecting cameras to the cloud using phones, through WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Lumera is the first device that allows users to one-click share photos from  camera and make backups on the go without taking phone out of the pocket. This is accomplished by pre-configuring preferred social networks (like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) with phone and with the help of its friendly OLED display and contextual buttons. This also allows users to control sharing process and visualize status.
Lumera adapts to most popular cameras like Canon and Nikon*. It communicates with cameras through USB connection and will not affect users experience because it'll be attached to the camera body with a tripod thumb screw. It also allows easy connection to cloud storage services like Dropbox or Google Drive and physical storage devices like flash drives or external hard disks.
Lumera team is inviting developers and hackers to build a new ecosystem on top of the camera-phone synergy. that’s why Lumera is Linux OS based and will be open source and open hardware.
Lumera is available through Kickstarter from USD $125. Pre-orders will continue throughout the Kickstarter campaign which ends on Tuesday, December 9. Visit the campaign at lumera.co/ks

Canon has announced the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens. This super-telephoto zoom lens features Canon L-series weather resistance and rugged magnesium housing to meet the needs of wildlife and sports photographers or photojournalists working out in the elements. The new Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM boasts a completely redesigned optical formula containing one Fluorite and one Super UD lens element - a combination unique to lenses in this focal range - to help deliver sharp images with high resolution and contrast. For photographers who want to work as closely as possible to their subjects, the minimum focusing distance of the lens has been reduced to just 3.2 ft. (0.98m), resulting in a maximum magnification of 0.31x. The original EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM was known for its push-pull zoom adjustment, but the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM uses a much more conveniet rotation-type zoom ring. The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens is scheduled to be available in December 2014 for an estimated retail price of £1,999.99 / €2,499.99 / $2,199.99.

New Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens Delivers an Enhanced IS System Providing Four Shutter Speed Steps of Correction, a Rotation-Type Zoom Ring, and New Optical Element Formula to Help Maximize Image Quality

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 10, 2014 - Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the highly anticipated Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM lens, a second generation compact super-telephoto zoom lens featuring significant advancements in optical quality, image stabilization performance up-to-four steps, and rotating-zoom-ring design. This new L-series super- telephoto zoom lens features Canon L-series weather resistance and rugged magnesium housing to meet the needs of wildlife and sports photographers or photojournalists working out in the elements. Fully compatible with all EOS cameras, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM features a completely redesigned optical formula containing one Fluorite and one Super UD lens element - a combination unique to lenses in this focal range - to help deliver sharp images with high resolution and contrast. This combination of elements helps thoroughly suppress chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range.
"The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM is the logical evolution of the very popular EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM introduced 16 years ago," said Yuichi Ishizuka, President and COO of Canon U.S.A., Inc., "This long awaited, next generation lens was developed to be a highly portable and adaptable telephoto zoom lens for today's modern professional and advanced amateur photographers."
For photographers who want to work as closely as possible to their subjects, the minimum focusing distance of the lens has been reduced to just 3.2 ft. (0.98m), resulting in maximum magnification of 0.31x. The original EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM was well known for its push-pull zoom adjustment, but the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM uses a rotation-type zoom ring similar to the one found on the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens that allows for more precise adjustments, easier handling, and consistently excellent weight balance during handheld photography. In addition, the lens features an improved zoom torque adjustment ring that allows for the easy setting of zoom tension based on personal shooting preferences. The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM also features an inner focusing system, a powerful yet quiet Ring USM, a high-speed CPU and optimized auto focus (AF) algorithms for fast and accurate autofocusing in various shooting situations.
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM features three Image Stabilization (IS) modes - standard, panning, and during exposure only. Each IS mode is individually engineered to help provide outstanding results in a wide variety of shooting situations, and all serve to satisfy the personal preferences of photographers based on the type of IS they desire. The optical IS provides up to four shutter speed steps of correction, increased from 1.5 steps in the previous model*. In addition, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM features Canon's newly developed Air Sphere Coating (ASC) which helps to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting significantly, as well as a 9-bladed circular aperture Electro-Magnetic Diaphragm that helps to enhance beautiful, softly blurred backgrounds.
As with all L-series lenses, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM is highly resistant to dust and water, with excellent durability in even harsh conditions, ideal for wildlife photographers even in rainforest environments, or sports photographers on the sideline grabbing action shots of the big game. Fluorine coating on the front and rear surfaces of the lens can repel dust particles and water droplets. It also makes smears and fingerprints easy to remove without the use of lens cleaning fluid. Included with the lens is the new ET-83D lens hood, that features a cleverly placed and convenient side window allowing the user to easily adjust specialty filters while the lens hood remains in place. In addition, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM is equipped with a newly designed detachable tripod mount which can be removed to reduce weight during handheld operation.

Joby Flash Clamp & Locking Arm

News image

Joby has launched a new accessory for photographers using off-camera flashes. "We often see awkward setups with off-camera flashes, such as people holding their flash in one hand while holding their camera with the other, or people wrestling with a light stand or pole," said Michael Jue, director of product design at Joby. The new Flash Clamp & Locking Arm innovates with a clamp that lets users quickly secure their wireless flash to any surface less than two inches in width. The locking arm also has two fully articulating ball joints that position the flash at any angle needed while providing a long-lasting hold. The Joby Flash Clamp & Locking Arm retails for $39.95.

JOBY Flash Clamp & Locking Arm™ helps transform everyday objects into lighting assistants
New flash accessory lets photographers use a stop sign, a fence or a door to dramatically improve photo lighting
SAN FRANCISCO, March 25, 2014 – To create more dramatic lighting effects, photographers use off-camera flashes to avoid the flat images that often result from built-in camera flashes. In order to create more interesting lighting angles, a photographer often requires bulky tools or an assistant to hold the flash in place. With the JOBY Flash Clamp & Locking ArmTM photographers can now quickly place off-camera flashes at unique angles for a more professional look.
"We often see awkward setups with off-camera flashes, such as people holding their flash in one hand while holding their camera with the other, or people wrestling with a light stand or pole. We think that JOBY’s tools, with their ability to adapt to their environment, make for a much more fun and imaginative way of positioning your flashes." said Michael Jue, director of product design at JOBY.
The JOBY Flash Clamp & Locking Arm innovates with a clamp that lets users quickly secure their Canon Speedlite 430 EX II Flash, Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight i-TTL Flash, PocketWizard Plus III, or any other wireless flash to any surface less than two inches (5.08 centimeters) in width. Now, a stop sign can hold the primary key light. To bring more details to shadows, a fence can mount a fill light. To separate the subject from its background, the top of a door can be a backlight platform. The locking arm also has two fully articulating ball joints that position the flash at any angle needed while providing a long-lasting hold. The Flash Clamp & Locking Arm comes with a removable Universal Flash Shoe that can be used on any tripod with a 1/4"-20 screw.
"To achieve good lighting, it’s critical to create the best angles," said Noah Balmer, lead designer at JOBY. "Some people see everyday objects at the shoot as nuisances and obstacles. At JOBY, we see them as photography platforms. Combine a few Flash Clamp & Locking Arm with our GorillaPod Hybrid or SLR-Zoom, and now, the whole world becomes your flash mount."
The JOBY Flash Clamp & Locking Arm retails for $39.95 (US MSRP) and is available for purchase at popular photospecialty retailers, consumer electronics stores and JOBY.com. The Universal Flash Shoe can also be bought separately for $4.95 (US MSRP). To learn more, go to http://joby.com/flashclamp.

First Set of Rumored Specs for the D800s Appear Online

nikond800_mini
It’s still early on in the rumor-gathering process for Nikon’s D800/D800E successor — possibly called the D800s — but rumor sites have already gotten their hands on a first set of leaked specs for the mysterious followup.
According to Nikon Rumors, the next D800 model will again eschew the AA filter in addition to featuring: Improved software to keep away the moiré, sRAW, an Expeed 4 imaging processor, improved low-light capability, the same AF improvements found in the D4s and 5fps continuous shooting.
So far the rumor site is ranking these specs at “50% probability” and no better, but it still gives us something to look forward to. Expected announcement date (entirely speculative at this point) is sometime between Photokina in September and CES in January.

New Samyang 12mm 1:2.0 NCS CS lens
March 21st 2014 — Samyang have announced the release of a new, wide-angle 12mm NCS CS lens designed for mirrorless APS-C cameras.
The new Samyang 12 mm 1:2.0 NCS CS offers photographers an affordable, wide angle lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. The lens has been designed for cameras fitted with a high resolution sensor. Samyang Optics has accustomed its clients to great quality optics offered at affordable prices and this is also the case with the 12 mm 1:2.0 NCS CS lens which provides technical parameters and potential that can easily compete with the best wide-angle prime and zoom lenses available on the market.
The new Samyang 12 mm gives a wide angle of view amounting to 98.9 degrees and rectilinear image mapping function. Two Hasselblad Lunar Cameras Go Under Hammer in Florida

News image

A duo of Hasselblad Lunar cameras with a joint retail value of around $14,000 were sold for $54,500 at a charity auction in Florida. The deal also included a unique set of classic motorsport photographs shot over decades with a Hasselblad camera by Concours Show founder and chairman, Bill Warner. Michael Hejtmanek, President of Hasselblad Bron said: "We knew our new, retro-look Lunar range was compelling - especially the rich-veined olive wood edition with its advanced technology and supreme ergonomics - but for a pair of them to raise $54,500 for Spina Bifida Jacksonville at this auction is just outstanding."
Hasselblad Press Release
Two Hasselblad Lunar cameras go under the auctioneer’s hammer for $54,500
A crowd at a charity auction in Florida couldn't believe their eyes as two brand new Hasselblad Lunar cameras with a joint retail value of around $14,000 suddenly rocketed in value to $54,500.
Two photo enthusiasts at the world-famous three day-long annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance exotic car festival began bidding against each other for the chance to own an 'ultimate luxury' olive wood-handled Lunar camera, crafted by the iconic camera brand.
When the bid reached $28,000 neither party wanted to lose out on a Lunar, so a deal was struck for an extra camera to be auctioned - for a joint record-busting price that raised a total of $54,500 for a spina bifida charity.
The deal also included a unique set of classic motorsport photographs shot over decades with a Hasselblad camera by Concours Show founder and chairman, Bill Warner.
Warner said: "Hasselblad is simply the ultimate camera. It's the Mercedes-Benz, the Porsche and the Ferrari of cameras, all in one."
The Amelia Island classic car and automotive art festival, which is billed as 'three days of automotive passion at the International Historic Motoring Awards, Motoring Event of the year (2013)', draws classic car enthusiasts from across the globe each year and raises millions of dollars for charity.
Michael Hejtmanek, President of Hasselblad Bron Inc. said: "We knew our new, retro-look Lunar range was compelling - especially the rich-veined olive wood edition with its advanced technology and supreme ergonomics - but for a pair of them to raise $54,500 for Spina Bifida Jacksonville at this auction is just outstanding."

Hasselblad H5D-50c CMOS camera: official launch

Hasselblad has begun shipping its pioneering H5D-50c, the world's first fully integrated medium format camera system to use CMOS sensor technology.

The new H5D-50c was first announced in mid-January and the camera enjoyed a fleeting debut at the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show, Japan, three weeks later - but is now fully available worldwide.
Ove Bengtson, Hasselblad Product Manager said: "As with all our cameras, the H5D-50c was developed with one goal in mind - to produce simply the best image quality possible today. This CMOS sensor model represents a major leap forward in camera development and breaks new grounds for medium format photographers who now will be able to shoot with the ultimate in image quality, regardless of lighting conditions. Outstanding ISO performance - up to ISO 6400 - will raise available light photography to new heights in this genre."
He added: "The camera, which we believe is one of the best we ever designed, is supported by a range of 12 extremely high performance lenses with built-in central lens shutter."

H5D-50c key features at a glance:

•    50 Mpixel CMOS sensor with almost twice the physical size of the largest 35 mm
      DSLR sensor.
•    Excellent high ISO performance: shoot at up to ISO 6400 and still produce crisp clean
images with perfect colours both on location or in the studio.
•    High dynamic range (up to 14 stops) for improved detail in shadow and highlight areas.
•    Longer shutter speeds (up to 12 minutes).
•    Faster capture rate: 1.5 frames per second.
•    Live Video in Phocus with higher frame rate.
•    True Focus auto-focus system with Absolute Position Lock and camera controls.
•    Options for working with tilt-shift.
•    GPS recording flexibility.

The new H5D-50c will retail at €20,900 (excl. tax).
Ian Rawcliffe, Hasselblad CEO, stated: "There is no price premium at all for customers who wish to acquire this groundbreaking technology. The H5D-50c will ship with the same price tag that applies to our H5D-50 model."
"The outstanding ISO performance of this new CMOS sensor-based model has quite literally put medium format photography into a new light. Now photographers no longer have to be so concerned about shooting in challenging conditions - and of course they can choose to work tethered or untethered with the option of processing raw images in Phocus or directly in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom", he added.
The new H5D-50c is currently on display at The Photography Show (NEC) and can also be seen and tested at WPPI Expo, Las Vegas (March 3-5).
